drama is dead."
Susskind. a TV producer of
boundless energy, has absolute
faith in the magic and power of
live, adult drama. He'll be even
more active as the head of Talent
Associates. Ltd.. next season.
On June 12 he'll present the last
of this seaon' 90-minute "Show

productions, and it has two' live
.series up for option.
Since Talent Associates took
over "Kraft Theater" several
weeks ago. that drama series has
had new life with such outstand
ing productions as the two-part
"All the King's Men." Yet "Kraft
Theater" is leaving television in
September. So are "Studio One"
and "Climax." "Matinee Theater
dies next month.
Susskind befteves there are
three reasons for the decline of
live drama:
1. "The hour shows on the air
have slipped badly in quality and
excitement. For a long time
they've ben going down hill in
scripts and production and the
public is becoming relatively
bored witn them.
2. "We're in an economic reces
sion. Because a live drama series
carries a big price tag. advertis
ers are looking for cheaper
snows.
3. television has become psy-
cnotically conformist. When a
trend begins, the boys leave their
psychiatrists' couches and rush
about, following the trend to west
erns or quiz series or a private
eye series or whatever it may
be."
Susskind feels, however, that
"A first-rate drama still is the
best sales medium for an adver
tiser. It puts over a message. A
sponsor who takes out new
ground on television stakes out
new customers for his product
Distinctive programming always
gets good results.
Original drama on the home
screen began to decline about 1955,
Susskind believes, when writers,
directors and producers who had
given the medium great vitality
for a few years began turning to
tne tneater and the movies. .

It will take two months for
movie makers to tell the story of
the brief time demons and his
outfit spent on that bitter mound
of earth called Pork Chop HiU.
The time was April 1953 and the
place was Korea. The prize was

COLOMBO. Ceylon (AP) Gov.
Gen. Sir Oliver Goonetilleke to
day claimed order is being re
stored throughout most of Ceylon
alter a week of Sinhalese riots
against the Tamil minority.
Goonetilleke declared a state of
emergency yesterday to help the
government suppress the riots. He
said only two flew outbreaks had
been reported.
Two persons were killed near
the eastern town of Batticaloa
when troops fired on a crowd de
fying the islandwide dusk-to-dawn
curfew. In Colombo three persons
were injured by a grenade burst.
Troops patrolled the streets of
Colombo and the government
banned assemblies of more than
50 persons.
It was difficult to assess the sit
uation because of disrupted com
munications in the northern dis
trict of Jaffna, where the biggest
group of Tamils lives.
At least 15 persons have been
killed and hundreds injured in
rioting and clashes with police
and troops. The Sinhalese were
angered by a Tamil passive re
sistance campaign against gov
ernment plans to make Sinhalese
the only official language in Ley
Ion.

like a pork chop on the topogra
phical man. The Americans and
the Communists fought bitterly
over the ground, yet it was not
unlike many other such encoun
ters in Korea.
But it caught the attention of
the world.
"Perhaps it was because the
peace talks were then going on
just 60 miles away," Joe Clemons
suggested.
Whatever the reason, the battle
is now being filmed as "Pork
Chop Hill" by Gregory Peck's
own company. Peck is playing
Joe, and there is a certain re
semblance, though the actor is
taller. Mrs. Clemons is also here
to witness the battle, but she
won't be portrayed in the picture.
Of the 83 speaking parts, all are
male.
Capt. Clemons, a Wesl Pointer
who calls Baltimore home, is oft
en called on to advise on aspects
of the film. He helped scout the
outdoor location in the San Fer
nando Valley hills, which he said
looked amazingly like Korea.
Were trying to make the pic
ture as technically correct as pos
sible," he said. "I'm told that be
fore World War II, it didn't mat
ter so much whether war pictures
were true to life. But now, since
so many men have been in com
bat themselves, you run the risk
of being laughed at if the picture
doesn't seem real."
There will be no errors in
"Pork Chop Hill" if Joe can help
it. At 29, he's already a veteran
of 12 years in the Army. He en
listed in 1946 at 17, served a year
and a half and won an appoint
ment to nest Point.
Petty Difference
Right, Not Wrong
GREENSBORO, N.C. "it
must be Robert Glenn Petty, a
cousin of mine." said Robert Guy
Petty, 24, while denying to the
court he had been arrested on the!
speeding charge.
Judge William Poteat, learning
the warrant specified only "Rob
ert G. Petty." gave the defendant
the benefit of the doubt and said
he could go.
But Robert Guy Petty said he
couldn't eo anywhere but back to
county jail to await trial on a
charge of failing to comply with
a peace warrant. Judge Foteat.
checking later, said there was no
mistaken identity in this case.
It s getting right disgusting.
said Robert Guy Petty as he was
led away.
