cused of threatening to dynamite
passenger train in a half-mil-
lion -dollar extortion plot.

The letter. Rrown said, was re-

Angeles passenger traffic and
public relations manager of South
ern Pacific.
Rrown said the letter writer
threatened to dynamite Southern
Pacific's streamliner Sunset
Limited No. 2 unless $300,000 in
$20 hills was paid.
The letter directed that a box of
money he placed in a mail hag
and thrown from the Sunset
Limited by a member ol the crew
uhen he saw a flashing light at a
designated point last night.

Pianist Given Big Reception

just as in Moscow.
The young pianist who brought
down the house in the Russian
capital received the same wildly
enthusiastic reception here Fri
day. He got one of the biggest
ovations ever given a performer
in Constitution Hall.
The audience, obviously taking
a shine to the 23-year-old Texan
stood up to cheer the artistry of
his piano magic.
As in Moscow and New York,
Van Cliburn had the accompany
ing assistance of Russian (Jonduc
tor Kiril Petrovich Kondrashin.
"Never before has Washington
so honored a pianist, a conductor
or any other musical artist," said
music critic Paul Hume of the
Washington Post.
Cliburn has a brilliant tech
nique, and a control that is prac
tically faultless.
Hume did have one criticism of
Van Cliburn. He said the bushy
haired pianist played Tschaikow
sky's Concerto in B Flat Minor
with too niuch restraint.
'The music needs excitement
and last night it lacked it most of
the time," said Hume.
The critic had nothing but
praise for Van Cliburn's 3rd Rach
maninoff, saying "His beautiful
piano sang with that touch of
genius every great pianist must
have.
Students Hit

dred shouting Cornell University
students early Saturday threw a
smoke bomb and rocks at the
home of the university president
and spattered him with eggs.
The incident in suburban
Cayuga Heights followed an earli
er torch-light rally on the school
campus by about 2.000 students.

tightening of the rules on boy-girl

Ignoring the pleas of their
student leaders, a contingent of
the demonstrator! - mostly male-
went in cars and on foot to the
residence of President Oeane P
Malott. The house is a mile from
Sage Dormitory for Women,
where the rally had been held.
When the group reached the
house, they called on the presi
dent to come out. They shouted in
sults and obscenities, observers
said, and demanded Malott's resig
nation. A smoke bomb was thrown,
covering the area with smoke.
Malott. barely making himself
heard over the shouting crowd
told the students that they had
made their point about the party
restrictions but that he was not
going to be ruled by a mob.
Rocks and eggs were thrown in
his direction. Some windows in
his house were broken and he was
splattered with eggs.

into the lungs of an unconscious
victim.
"It's as simple as blowing up a
balloon," says Dr. Vincent J. Col
lins, president of the New York
State Society of Anesthesiologists.
At Collins urging, the New
York State Medical Society has
officially adopted the method as
most effective. He hopes the
American Medical Assn. will fol
low suit at a San Francisco meet
ing next month.
Countless lives can be saved if
people will acquaint themselves
with the technique, Collins said.
He considers it three to four
times as effective as other sys
tems taught in years past, such
as the back pressure-arm lift and
Schaefer plan.
It is so simple that a 9-year-old
child can successfully revive an
unconscious man weighing 230
pounds.

Father Jailed
As Child Dies
BUFORD, Ga. (fl An unem
ployed tannery worker is In jail
charged with Involuntary man
slaughter in the moonshine whisky
death of his 10-year-old son.
Sheriff G. R. Leak said Felmer
James. 42, is being held in (2,000
bond for grand jury action.
The sheriff said he signed the
warrant yesterday after the state
crime laboratory reported that
Ray James, a fifth grade pupil,
had 0.31 per cent ethyl alcohol in
his blood and. that this was the
cause of death.
. James was in an intoxicated
condition, Leak said, when he and
the boy were found late Wednes
day by searchers after they had
been missing 23 hours.
Europe's highest office building,
