Irish stew to the baked and salted
love knots that were first looped
into existence by Pennsylvania
Germans. The fact is Uiat when he
was a young man Mr. McG. took
over a bakery that was awful
short of dough , . . and gradually
built it up to make a fortune in
the pretzel dodpe. Entering the
political race, he figured his
opponent might make something
out of it ... so he's beating him
to the punch. Pumh and pretzels, I

Sullivan To Present Review Of His TV Career June 22

NEW YORK To review kin
escopes of Ed Sullivan's CBS-TV
shows of the past 10 years is to
watch the fascinating cavalcade
of show business through a de
cade. The 'viewing audience will have
that opportunity June 22 on the
tenth anniversary of the show. As
part of the celebration Sullivan
also will present the Brussels
World's Fair on film June 15 in
a program narrated by Maurice
Chevalier
Sullivan leaves for Brussels by
plane immediately after his pro
gram next Sunday 18 p.m., EDT)
to film performances at the Fair
and as contrast to film such
great battlefields in the area as
Waterloo, Liege, Mons and Bas-togne.

HOLLYWOOD (fl - Alice White,
blonde star of the flaming age in
the movies, is making a comeback
after a period of blindness.
A year ago her sight was gone.
She had been trimming the gar
den of her home near the heart of
Hollywood. A ladder tipped. She
was hurled to the ground Her
shears gashed her left eye horri
bly.
"The other eye lost its sight out
of a sympathetic reaction." she
recalled. "For six months I could
do nothing but lie flat on my back.
The slightest movement or excite
ment would upset my eyes. All 1
could do was listen to the radio
and TV. Friends would read to
me. Fortunately, I had a loyal
bunch of friends who took care
of me.
"It was pretty tough lo be
knocked out like that after lead
ing such an active life. But I
came through it somehow. -And f
think I learned a lot from it. My
life isn't so frantic any more."
But she wants to get her career
active again. Still pretty at 49.
she shows none of the effects of
her accident. Her eyes are back
to normal, and she still has the
bounce that made her a star in
the early talkies.
Alice White, Clara Bow, Joan
Crawford and Jean Harlow typi
fied the emancipated female in
movies of the 20s and early 30s.
With her familiar milk-white bob.
Miss White often played the jazz
struck doll, the gangsters' sweet
heart or the madcap heiress.
Her kind of film faded from
popular favor and her career went
into a decline. Once wed to pro
ducer Sy Bartlett, she married
writer John Roberts and followed
him as he traveled during war-
lime service
I went domestic with a ven
geance, she laughed. "I even
went to school to learn how to
cook. But I don't think it was
such a good idea. I think men
resent women who are too domestic."
Divorced again, she resumed
her acting career, her last per
formance being a small role in
Joan Crawford's "Flamingo
Road" in 1949. Now redhaired
("I think a woman looks kinda
silly as; a blonde when she gels
to be my age','), she is seeking
roles in movies or TV. And she's
realistic about taking whatever
comes along.
"1 never look back." she said.
"What's past is past. I never even
saved a clipping when I was a
star."

"For two years I heard 'hart'
for 'hot' and people kept calling
me Hallaway.
"Now, every night after the
show I step just outside and I'm
right in Covent Garden. I walk
down The Long Acre and listen
to the cockney fruit porters. I can
freshen my accent and breathe in
that atmosphere.
"The place is full of Doolittle
characters and my wife tells me
any one of them could play Al
fred s part.
"A lot of us in the cast think
the American audiences enjoyed
the cockney dialect better than
the audiences over here. The Eng
lish are accustomed to cockney
and look down on it. It's newer
to the Americans.
"Rex Harrison's opening song.
Why can't the English teach
their children how to speak
isn't as good here as it was i
America. The English don't like
jokes about themselves the way
Americans do.
Holloway lives west of London
Nearby are several fine courses
where Holloway, Rex Harrison
and the old British golf master

Loew s to let us do it, and it was
the first time the movies cooper
ated with the new medium of tele
vision.
"Charles Laughtnn directed the
cameras himself in this one, hit
first reading from the Bible on
television. See, he uses cameras
for punctuation. Technicians have
told me they learned more about
camera work from watching this
than anything they'd seen before.
"Watch Humphrey Bogart
frighten Yogi Berra. Berra didn't
know he was anywhere around or
he wouldn't have made that
crack. . .
"This is Jackie Gleason's first
sketch on network television and
this is Johnny Ray's TV debut.
"Had you forgotten Victor
Borge's TV debut in '54? Watch.
In '55 we turned the tables on Ed
Murrow. Right you are. Elvis
himself in '56. Just 20 seconds of
him this time..
