Airline officials said Capt. Jesse
Bradford of Baltimore reported
his airliner was flying east toward
Washington at 19,000 feet when a
B47. apparently dropping down to
land, suddenly crossed within 500
feet of his plane.
"Bradford radioed the Civil
Aeronautics Administration in
Cleveland and asked that a formal
protest be filed," airline officials
taid
The officials said the airliner, a
Vickers Viscount similar to the
one involved in Tuesday's collision
carried a crew of lour.
The airliner was en route from
Chicago to Washington and Baltimore.

awarded diplomas.

to action against an aggressor
which is "under the control of in
ternational communism."
The effect is to put teeth into
declaration which has often
been criticized as somewhat
meaningless.
Dulles gave his interpretation
of the Eisenhower Doctrine, as it
is popularly called, at a press
conference in Washington in dis
cussing the rebellion in Lebanon.
Lebanon has accused the Unit
ed Arab Republic of fomenting
and supporting the rebellion.
The United States has sent a
quantity of "police arms" large
ly small arms and tear gas
equipment to Lebanon o aid
against "rioters." It is sending a
number of tanks.
There has been some confusion
over the applicability of the Eis
enhower Doctrine to Lebanon.
The reason for the confusion is
the provision authorizing aid
against an aggressor under the
control of international Commu
nism.
Though Egypt and Syria are
receiving arms and other aid
from Soviet Russia. The United
Arab Republic certainly cannot
be held to be under Soviet control.
President Carnal Abdel Nasser
has denied aiding the Lebanese
rebels. He says the rebellion was
planned and is being carried out
by pro-United Arab Republic Leb
anese. Dulles agreed that the congres
sional resolution specified aid to
a country menaced by Commu
nist aggression. But he added:
"That doesn't mean, however,
that there is nothing that can be
done.
"There is the provision of the
Middle East resolution which
says that the independence of
these countries is vital to peace
and the national interest of the
United States. That is certainly a
mandate to do something if we
think that our peace and vital in
terests are endangered in any
quarter.
Dulles pointed out that this pro
vision was inserted in the Eisen
hower Doctrine by the Senate.
Britain Cuts
Bank Rates
LONDON Wt-Britain today cut
its bank rate another half per
cent, reducing the Bank of Eng
land's rate for lending money to
5 per cent.
It was the second reduction in
nine weeks in the fight to bolster
the British economy. The rate was
cut on March 20 from 7 to 6 per
cent.
The bank rate is the control
valve on the nation's economy. It
had been sent skyrocketing last
September to 7 per cent highest
in Britain since 1921 in a fight
to tighten credit and steady the
value of the shaky pound sterling
The second reduction this year
was seen as a turther sign oi
Britain's growing confidence in its
economic position despite reces
sion reports abroad.
The news of the reduction had
an immediate buoyant effect on
the London stock market. Brokers
were delighted.

WASHINGTON MV-The United
States has nearly doubled a lorce
of Globemaster transport planes
sent to Europe amid outbreaks in
Lebanon 'and Algeria.
The Defense Department said
last night 13 of the three-dick
planes went to join 18 others which
left for Germany, starting Satur
day morning. The Pentagon said
8 of the 13 took off later Saturday
and S headed across the Atlantic
since then.
Basing the 200-p assenger
planes in Europe would put them
in position to evacuate Americans
from the Middle East and North
Africa, if the need arose.
The department said '.he 13 ad
ditional transports were sent to
provide replacement parts and
"normal logistics" for the first 18

Mrs. Wright, critically injured
when the car she was driving
smashed broadside into her hus
band's auto, was still in Bridgeton
Hospital today with a possible
skull fracture. Her condition was
listed as good.
The husband. Lester, also 19,

pulled from his blazing auto.

Walter Robinson, 5. of Newfield.

State Police Sgt. William R.
Conway said his office was look
ing into discrepancies between
statements made by Robinson and
.Mrs. Wright.
Conway quoted Robinson as say
ing he had been the woman's boy
friend for about a year and that
Wright knew and apparently did
not disapprove of their relationship.
He told police the Wrights had
quarreled on the night ot the ac
cident because Mrs. Wright want
ed Robinson's car to drive home.
She had used it earlier to take a
road test for a driver's license.
According to Robinson's state
ment, he and Mrs. Wright had
made a date for later in the eve
ning. The date had been arranged
In Wright's presence, he said.
Mrs. Wright was going home to
hange her clothes, the statement
said, and was to have returned
to Robinson's gas station. Husband
and wife drove off at the same
lime.
Conway said Robinson will be
i barged with allowing an unli
censed driver to operate his car.

The woman's version of the af
fair, police said, was that her hus
band drove off angrily after the
argument and that she borrowed
Robinson's car to follow him
home.
She said nothing of the reported
date or of any relationship with
Robinson.

correct. Conway said, the couple
"might have been more or less
racing to their Bridgeton home.
He said each car could have
taken one of several routes, add
ing: "They happened to meet at
one of the country crossroads
