Hollywood Mourns Passing Of Actor

were saddened today by the death
of the veteran, 67-year-old stage
and screen star.
Colman. whose whimsical touch
and clipped accent made him fam
ous in his 30-year car'-er. died
Monday at St. Francis llo.-pital of
a virus lung infection.
Death ended the gray-haired ac
tor's plans to return to his native
England next month.

Samuel Goldwyn claims to be the
writer's best friend.'

Stritch, partially paralyzed by a
severe stroke yesterday, spent a
good nicht and doctors said his
condition had not worsened. The
crisis was expected sometime to
day. "His condition is satisfactory."

American Pianist To Play Sunday On TV

most misleading characters on lei
evision is a bearded, bright-eyed
idiot in a derby hat who passes
himself off by the name of Sydney
rerguson.
It's rather astonishing to learn
that there are many people who
fail to recognize him for what he
is: Skilch Henderson, jazz virtuo
so, musical classicist, composer,
distinguished conductor of sym
phonic orchestras.
A Ferguson, he is frequently
the subject of "man on the street"
interviews on the Steve AHen
Show. As Henderson his life is
infinitely wiser, richer and more
worthwhile.
Ferguson doubtless never heard
of Van Cliburn, the young Amen
can pianist who recently won the
Tschaikowsky competition in Mos
cow. But Henderson knows him
well, has encouraged him in his
career. As musical director of the
Allen Show, he phoned him in
Moscow after he won the com-

action pushing the state nearer
the choice between school integra
tion or closure.
The high court yesterday turned
down the state's appeal of a fed
eral court order directing the ad
mission of seven Negro children
to three white schools in Arling
ton County, adjacent to Washington.
Virginia, whose law calls for
closure of publin schools in which
integration occurs, has 25 days to
ask the Supreme Court to recon
sider. But whether Gov. J. Lindsay
Almond Jr. and Atty. Gen. A. S.
Harrison will take such a course
was highly uncertain.
Even if such a request were
made on the last possible day,
June 14, the court most probably
would hand down a decision be
fore adjourning late in June, leav
ing the state even less time to
come up with new legal expedi
ents. Unofficial sources suggested
Virginia might well use its re
vamped Pupil Placement Act
effective June 27 as a jiimping
off point for a new round of ap
peals. The state might insist that the
Negro children seeking admission
to the white schools of Arlington
submit to the provisions of the
new placement act in September.
Thus, an entirely new series of
appeals in higher and lower courts
might be born, while the schools
remained segregated.
Gov. Almond said In Miami,
where he is attending the annual
governor's conference, that yes
terday's Supreme Court action
brought "no change In the situa
tion in Virginia."

artist as the popular performer in
Henderson it's natural to ask him
if he'd change places with Cliburn
today.
"In one word." he replied,
"never." When he comes home he
faces the grimmest test any man
can face. He faces the New York
critics. He must have 'good re
views in New York. His greatest
ally in the contest for musical
longevity is his youth."
