Dr. Joachim Prinz was elected
national president yesterday at the
end of the AJC national conven
tion.
The organization, which takes
pride in making strong stands on
controversial issues, fought over
a watered-down resolution voicing
its concern over nuclear weapons
tests.
But it swung hard on race,
Southland bombing and Middle
East policy, issues which were the
main concern of the AJC through
out its convention. It went on rec
ord, by unanimous votes, with cri
ticism of the Eisenhower adminis
tration on these issues.
Prinz, who succeeded Dr. Israel
Goldstein of New York as presi
dent, said in an acceptance
speech: "The events in South
America point clearly to the fact
that we have failed to understand
that Lima, Peru, and Caracas
Venezuela, are but a stone's throw
from Little Rock, Ark., and that
our fight for civil rights here in
America might well be understood
in terms of the foreign policy of
the United States and in the battle
for the souls and minds of the un
told millions of yet-uncommitted
peoples in the world.
Prinz is rabbi of the largest
Jewish congregation in New Jer
sey, Temple B'Nai Abraham. He
also has an international reputa
tion as a ' Jewish leader and it
prominent in the World Jewish
Congress.
For 12 years, until the Nazis
threw him out in 1937, he was a
rabbi in Berlin.
Want To Die On Gallows
Says Grocery Clerk Killer

Kay Kirkham, 21, a cocky killer
scheduled to hang June 7.
If his death sentence isn't com
muted at a final hearing June 4
the 200-pound youth will die on the
gallows for killing grocery clerk
David Frame, 50, in a $50 holdup
in bait Lake City in August 1956
Mrs. Ruth Webster was also slain
in the holdup, but Kirkham was
tried only on the Frame killing.
Kirkham has refused to appeal
tor clemency.
"I don't want life. My parents
are the ones who want me com
muted. They think you can be re
habilitated in prison . . . but re
habilitation comes from within
The stubble-haired youth wore a
fixed smile and seemed unaware
that he was wringing his hands
during an interview at Utah State
Prison. Despite an occasional
lapse into bop talk, his conversa
tion showed evidence of the read
ing he has done in his 16 months
in death row medical journals,
psychiatric texts and legal briefs
his case.

The film, a nonpolitical romance
of war-separated lovers, won the
unanimous nod of a jury headed

manitarian qualities." Director
Charles Vidor was the American
representative.
The only U. S. winner of a festi
val ward was Paul Newman,
named top actor for his perform
ance in the American film version
of Nobel prize-winning William
Faulkner s Long Hot Summer.
Newman is now in Hollywood. The
female acting award was divided
among women taking part in the
Swedish entry "At the Threshold
of Life" a story of childbirth.

Does his religious upbringing
provide solace now?
"There's too much hate in me
to accept religion. If I were going
on a religious kick, I'd have done
it long before now."

The eldest of five children raised
in the Mormon faith, Kirkham said
he turned from the church and
quit school in the 11th grade. After
18 months in the Air Force, he
went AWOL, committed a robbery
in Colorado and was given an un
desirable discharge while serving
nine months in a reformatory.
' "I was out five weeks on parole
when 1 shot those people, he said.
His rebellion extends into prison.
After letting his hair and beard
grow for 13 months, he recently
shaved his head and face bald to
irk prison officials who ordered his
hair trimmed.
His execution will be Utah's first
hanging in 46 years.
"1 chose hanging instead of the
firing squad because of the pub
licity. . . the novelty ... to put
the state to more inconvenience,"
he said.
Kirkham spends his last days
listening to radio music, reading
books and scanning newspaper
clippings about his case which he
keeps pinned to the wall of his
cell.
Is he scared?

Man Uses Head
To 'Shoot' Thief
DENVER W A young stickup
man flailed an elderly man on the
head with the butt of a gun last
night. The weapon fired, fatally
wounding the bandit's accomplice.
The red-haired victim, between
18 and 21, was not immediately
identified.
The gunman tried to arouse him.
then fled in a car before a half
dozen witnesses.
The intended victim, Emil Myers,
68, was treated at a hospital for a
severe head cut and released. He
told officers the pair had accosted
him outside his home and demand-'
ed money.

ginning of the campaign. Liven

Gov. George Leader is the JJem
ocratic state party choice (or the
Senate nomination. Clarence P,
Bowers, Reading battery manu
facturer, is opposing him on the
Furman ticket.
Stassen, 51, was governor of
Minnesota three times. An issue
during a listless campaign has
been his Pennsylvania residence.
He also was President Eisenhow
er's disarmament aide and in 1956
he strongly opposed Vice Presi
dent Nixon's bid (or renomination
at the Republican National Con
vention.
The state GOP leadership looks
favorably on Nixon as a 190 pres
idential candidate and a Republi
can governor would wield great
influence over the direction the
Pennsylvania delegation takes in
19H0.
McGonigle, also 51, was lapped
by the state leadership as a new
(ace to spark a GOP rally (rom
defeats in the 1954 gubernatorial
election and the 1956 senatorial
election. He has never run (or po
litical office before.

Dog Rips 4-Inch

DALLAS in Audrey Lee Helms,
4. stooped to pet a shaggy black
and white dog while visiting her
grandparents yesterday.
Before bystanders could rescue
the screaming child, her father
said, the animal ripped a four
inch wound near her right eye,
and gashed both checks, her scalp
and right shoulder.
The father. Edward Ray Helms,
pulled the dog away while his wife
snatched up the little girl. They
were here from Euless, Tex., to(
visit the grandparents, Mr. andi
Mrs. E. L. McQueen.
Police took the dog to the pound
for rabies observation and ticketed
its owner for a leash law violation.

AUTHOR DIES
HOLLYWOOD Wl Death has
claimed F. Hugh Herbert, 60.
author and playwright. He died
of lung cancer Saturday in Cedars
of Lebanon Hospital.
Among his Broadway plays
were "Kiss and Tell" and '"The
Moon is Blue." Both were adapted
later to motion pictures.
Herbert's widow, Mary, and two
daughters survive.
