NEW YORK lift Of the numer
ous interview programs now on
television and radio, none has
more quiet charm than "Insight
with Arnold Michaelis," which the
Mutual Broadcasting System is
presenting on Sundays.
Michaelis is a disarming fellow
who docs not goad or lecture his
subjects, but lets them say what's
their minds and hearts. Per
sonally, I'd vote it the radio pro
gram I'd most like to listen to

Elmer Davis, Newsman, Dies

Davis, long-time radio-TV news
analyst, died yesterday of the ef
fects of a stroke he suffered two
months ago. He was 60.
Davis, a white-haired Hoosier,
had been relatively inactive since
a heart attack five years ago.
He interrupted his broadcasting
work during World War II to serve
as chief of the government's Of
fice of War Information. In addi
tion, he wrote novels, short stories
nd essays, and worked for the
New York Times for II)- years.
Davis classed himself as a liber
al and he helped found the Ameri
cans for Democratic Action in
1947. That organization was wind-

Though the Russian exhibit is
much bigger and costlier, the
United States entry is doing as
good a job, he remarked.
'The Russian building is over
powering in its size, said Link
letter. "There are displays of
tremendous machinery and prop
aganda slogans everywhere. It is
elfective in its way.
"But I think our building does
a fine job. ihere have been some
complaints about what has been
selected, but that s natural.
American means something differ
ent to every American.
"We haven't tried to overpower
the Fair visitors. For instance,
in the middle of the building is a
fashion show.
"There have been complaints
about the food we are serving
hot dogs, hamburgers, cheese
cake, etc. But 1 see nothing wrong
with that. Why should we have a
swank restaurant, as the other
nations do? We couldn't outdo
them in excellence of food. Nor
could we serve as many people
as we re doing now.
Linkletter spent three days at
the Fair, filming segments for his
"People are Funny and House
party" TV shows. But he s no
sketchy viewer of fairs. Art helped
stage the San Francisco and San
Diego Worlds Fairs, assisted with
those at Houston, Dallas and
Cleveland.
"So I know what I'm talking
about," he said. "I viewed the
d,,co!c rr with an eve toward
f handlinf a volume of
visitors, etc. And I must say that
the Belgians have done a fan
tastic job. It is one of the best
operated fairs I have ever seen.
It wouid be a crying shame, he
added, if the whole thing is torn
down as scheduled at the end of
the exposition.

Last night, for example, Mi
chaelis offered an insight into Os
car Hammerstein II following an
interview with his partner in
many Broadway hit shows, Rich
ard Rodgers. on the previous Sun
day. Listening to a recording of
the interview in advance of the
broadcast, I felt I'd learned more
about Hainmerstein in 25 minutes
than from reading thousands of
words about him.
Hammerstein loves to recite his
lyrics and recites them very
well. He confessed that some of the
songs can make him cry. "But
I don't cry at sadness. I cry at
naive happiness, as it's expressed
by the character singing the
song.
Why "Oklahoma! was a great
hit is a fact that still perplexes
hotn Hottgcrs and Hammerstein
I he lyricist told Michaelis, point
ing out the numerous rules it
broke: No girls for the lirst 40
minutes. One of its best songs
wasted in the first three minutes
of the show. No important new
songs in the second act.
"We almost didn't get a back
er." he recalled. "We peddled it
from penthouse to penthouse with
no takers."
Like nearly every first-rate art
ist, Hammerstein was rather in
coherent about his creative proc
esses except to say that "All sorts
of ideas come to you when you're
active. When you just sit back in
an arm chair, nothing comes to
you."
Of his own philosophy and work
he said: "Somebody has to keep
saying there are beautiful mead
ows bathed in sunshine. The world
would get out ot focus if we only
listened to artists who emphasize
the wastelands."
Michaelis, formerly a radio and
teleision producer, likes his sub
jects to invite nun to dinner at
Iheir homes. Alter dinner they go
into onuther room together, with
microphones hung from their
necks, and talk for as long as
they wish.
The interviews, edited for lensth
also are made into recordings
which are on the market.
