To Call
On Newk
LOS ANGELES (UP) The
Los Angeles Dodgers, nesting in
last place in the National League
lor me ursi nme in to years,
today called on big Don New
combe to try and stem the ram
paging San Francisco Giants.
Manager Bill Rigney of the
Giants sent bonus baby Mike Mc
Cormack with a 2-0 record against
Newcombe who has two losses
and no wins this year. The game
was the last for both clubs before
starting three weeks on road trips
east.
The victory-flushed Giants ran
up their fifth straight win and
fifth in a row over the Dodgers
Monday night with a 12-3 triumph
led by Willie Mays' two homers.
one a grand slam blast over the
left center field screen that the
grinning star later said was the
hardest-hit homer of his career
THE BIG BLOWS
Mays drove in five runs with
his two homers and Daryl Spen
cer also hit two homers to raise
his total for the season to six,
four of them off the Dodgers. And
the Giants 17 hits was their larg
est total of the year.
For Mays, the two circuit blows
made a total of five in three
games, all against the Dodgers
Although one of Mays' homers
was over the left field screen, it
probably would have been good
for four bases in almost any park
landing about 30 rows up in
Memorial Coliseum.
The Giants blasted starter Don
Drysdale out of the box in two in
nings for his sixth defeat against
one relief win. Meanwhile. Ruben
Gomez was scoring his third win,
all against the Dodgers, against
two defeats for the season, Gomez
struck out 10 men and walked
only one while giving up six hits
SOME LONG BALLS
The Dodgers were able to get
more extra base hits than nor
mal for them, five of the safeties
going for more than one base,
climaxed by Gil Hodges' homer
in the bottom of the ninth.
But Manager Walt Alston said
the Dodgers didn't get enough
men on base to make the long
hits count. And four errors con
tributed to their downfall as only
five ol the Giants' runs were
earned.
The Dodgers used five pitchers
before they were able to stem
the Giants' surge in the ninth
when reliefer Clem Labine, set
them down with a single walk.
The last time the Dodgers were
in the National League cellar was
on July 2, 1048. Despite their poor
showing thus lar this season,
29.770 fans turned out Monday
night to bring the Dodgers total
home attendance for 20 games
to 557,2811.

SAN FRANCISCO UH Joe

5.791 yards, just 69 short of the
mark set by Philadelphia's Steve
Van Buren.
Actually Perry, a fi foot. 195

7,192 yards in 1.343 carries. Bui
he was a 49cr for two seasons in
the All-America Conlerence and
