state of Illinois has taken steps
to retrieve precious mementos of
Abraham uncoin wnicn it says
were taken by a former custodian
of the Civil War president's tomb.

ware. Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio
and Utah. But in these 12 states
they could face a real horse race:

ago GOP candidates polled 45 per
cent or more of the votes.
So the odds, while favoring the
Democrats to increase their mar
gins, are far from being prohibi
tive. A switch of relatively few
votes could make a difference.

Gunmen Walk Off
With Diamond Loot

Saturday on several leads to three
daring gunmen who walked Into
a diamond Importer's office dur
ing lunch hour Friday and made
off with an. estimated 1250,000 in
gems.
Hermann Sputz, president of
Sputi and Remer Co. Ltd., said
the trio entered his office with
guns drawn while he was talking
with two friends. Two of trie Dana

The thieves tied up Sputx and
his friends, took a wallet contain
ing $800 from one of them, then
removed a wooden box containing
the stones from a vault. They cut
telephone lines in th offices be
fore leaving.
