Shah Studies
Yife Troubles
TEHRAN, Iran un The shah
of Iran conferred with his Royal
Court Council Monday to see if it
can help him find an heir to his
throne without divorcing his child
less queen.
The 38-year-old monarch also
heard a report from his special
envoy to- Queens Soraya-She is
reported to prefer a divorce rather
than allowing her husband to take
an additional wife, permitted by
Moslem law.
Sen. Sardar Bakhtiari returned
Sunday night from visiting the
green-eyed queen in West Ger
many, where her father is the
Iranian ambassador. He said he
carried Soraya's "final words" on
the possibility of a reconciliation.
Bakhtiari appeared downcast as
he spoke to newsmen, and they
conjectured that he held out little
hope the shah would accept the
queen s proposals.
Dulles Cites
Space Lag
WASHINGTON Wl-Secretary of
State Dulles has doubts that
America will beat the Soviet Union
to the moon because of the Sovi
ets' head start in outer space ex
ploration.
He told a recent session of the
House Foreign Affairs Committee
that the country that reaches the
moon first will most certainly
score an important propaganda
victory.
I think whenever the Soviets
register a first in an area that is
spectacular, they gain greatly
from it, and we go down in the
popular estimation, said Dulles.
He told the committee in a Feb,
28 appearance that the United
States is closing the scientific gap
on the boviets but perhaps not fast
enough to win the race to the
moon. The committee made
Dulles' testimony public yester
day.
Dulles said despotisms are
able to push the people harder to
achieve certain spectacular re
sults over the democracies. He
raised the question of how much
the government would be justified
in making .taxpayers sweat to
win a race "that would have little
practical value.
The secretary reiterated that he
sees at this time little likelihood
of an agreement with the Soviets
on ending nuclear tests.
CITY BRIEFS
Civil Defense
Class Slated
A class in explosive ordnance
reconnaissance will be held by the
Klamath County Civil Defense
Agency Monday and Tuesday,
March 10 and 11. according to
M. G. iBusterl Gordon, county di
rector. The classes, open to all in
terested civil defense and law en
forcement personnel, will be held
at the Suburban Fire Department
beginning at 7 o clock each evening.
The course will be conducted by
Lt. Daniel W. Doty, of the 53rd
Ordnance Detachment, Vancouver
Barracks in Washington. During
the day of March 10 and 11, Lt.
Doty and his team of instructors
will be available to investigate any
calls on suspected explosives that
may have been found in the vicini
ty, and they will also inspect any
war souvenirs if their owners will
report them to the Suburban Fire
Department.

Worker Injured
By Freight Car
A 25-year-old Klamath Falls man
escaped with only slight injuries
last Saturday afternoon when he
was caught between a loading
escalator and a moving freight
car.
Investigating officials said that
Jerry 0. Madden, 239 East Main
Street, was loading carrots aboard
the freight car when a moving loco
motive inadvertently switched into
the car.
Madden was rushed to the Klam
ath Valley Hospital and was re
leased after observation.
