Black Rock

A few years ago Hollywood produced a thriller, "Bad Day
at Black Rock," which showed the violence that
, followed a lone man's visit to a desolate area of the
modern West. There actually is such an area Black Rock
Desert in northwest Nevada but its residents, if they saw
the picture at all, must have been amused. They can count
on a lone man's visit to bring at least three good days each
week. The man is Dr. William J. Bryan, and the days are
those that he flies into Black Rock not for violence,
but to save lives. Dr. Bryan has a practice in Reno, 100 miles
south, but three times a week the jovial physician lifts his
huge bulk (well over 200 pounds) into his light plane,
then flies up the line sometimes at sagebrush level in
snowstorms to care for the sick and injured of one of the
most isolated areas in the U.S. Such secluded spots are
chronically desperate for medical aid, and Black Rock
doesn't underestimate the flying doc's sacrifice. A mining
firm donates free office space, road crews have bulldozed
an airstrip, and residents volunteer to radio up-to-date
weather information to keep Dr. Bryan's flights of mercy
from being grounded.
