Modern Plumbing Installations
Add Utility and Beauty To Home
One of the most important
rooms to be considered in mod
ernizing a home is the bathroom.
No other room is so closely re-
space is limited, the homeowner
may install two lavatories in the
bathroom or a lavatory-dressing
table in a bedroom.
If possible, children should
lated to the general health and have a bathroom immediately ad
well-being of a family. No other
room contributes more to the
comfort and convenience of a
home.
The first consideration in re
modeling or building a bathroom
is the proper selection of fixtures.
If the fixtures in the present bath
room show signs of wear cracks,
leaks and discoloration they
should be replaced.
Up-to-date bathroom facilities
are naturals in the modern home.
Many designers set this mood
with a distinctive lighting effect.
They install a wall of ribbed
( transparent plastic which can be
' illuminated from behind. This fea
ture is balanced by dark walls
and flooring.- A glass shower-bath
enclosure adds interest.
If the bathroom area is rela
tively large 18 x 11 or morel
jacent to their bedrooms. Child
sized fixtures will encourage
cleanliness. Lavatories can be
connected closer to the floor,
within easy reach. Mirrors can
go above at the desired heights.
A four foot square bathtub or
receptor tub which has a diagonal
bathing area and built-in seat is
perfect. Smaller toilets also are
more comfortable for children.
Cast-iron bathtubs come in the
conventional rectangular or the
square shape in both recess and
corner models. A thick enamel
coat gives a smooth appearance
that will not dim or peel through
many years of use.
The square bathtub offers
wide, roomy bathing area on the
diagonal with integral seats on
either side. A smaller version

smaller bathrooms, and often
make a second complete bath
room possible in limited remodel
ing space.
Many homes have space that
can be converted easily into a
handy powder room or a second
complete bathroom. Under - the
stairs area in two-story houses,
extra downstairs closets in old
er residences, an old pantry off
the kitchen, the basement or awk
ward corners and long hallways i
in homes of any age provide an
excellent location.
Before planning bathrooms for
a modernization job, family needs
should be taken into considera
tion. A family of more than three
people needs and deserves the
comfort and convenience of at
least two complete bathrooms. If

At least 400,000 old homes are
being torn down each year. Most
of these have unsafe foundations,

valve type of water control, once
restricted to public rest-rooms,
now is available for home instal
lation under certain circum
stances. New concealed toilet
tanks are coming in for much at
tention, too. Manufacturers now
have devised ways of hiding the
tank either in the wall of the
bathroom or in the attic.
Once the proper fixtures have
been selected, tne next problem is

clothing, medicines, toiletries and
other bathroom articles. Cabinets

enough for the increasing variety
of medicines and toiletries used
by the family.
A recessed hamper for soiled
clothes can be installed in bath
rooms lacking a laundry chute.
Special racks that slide in and
out of cabinets are handy for
hanging light laundry. A protect
ed, low wattage bulb inside the
cabinet will speed up drying and
make it possible to hang laundry
out of sight.
Rapid air exchange to combat
bathroom humidity is usually pro
vided by an outside window.
Many windowless bathrooms or
humidity may require a ventilat
ing fan to expel moisture-laden
air from the room.
Vertical grab bars in the tub
and shower, non-skid floors, prop
erly located electrical equipment
and recessed radiators contribute
to bathroom safety.
Ceramid or plastic floor and
wall tile provides a beautiful as
well as practical, finish for the
bathroom. These easy-to-clean
materials shed water and mois
ture and are available in colors
and patterns to blend with fix
tures and accessories. Acoustical
tile can be used for an attractive
sound-proof ceiling. Storage clos
ets placed against an inside wall
further isolate noise between the
bathroom and adjacent rooms.
Mirrors add an atmosphere of
luxury, as well as to make small
bathrooms or powder rooms ap
pear larger. Warm tints in fluor
escent lighting or a combination
of fluorescent and incandescent
lighting placed near mirrors help
illuminate the entire bathroom.
Today you can find every type
of bathroom fixture in the size,
style and color you need.

OUTDOOR LIVING ROOM is achieved by well-planned
landscaping and a comfortablo patio arrangement. Trees,
flowers and shrubs lend beauty and charm to this-designed-for-
ease terrace. With today's weatherproof lighting units
and outlets, an attractive garden spot can be the perfect
setting for family activities day and night.
Landscaping Help
Raise Value Of Home
With outdoor living vastly in-1
creased in all parts of the coun
try, more emphasis is placed on
landscaping, as a great many mil
lions of people at home, and on
the highways, look to the beauty,
pleasure, and financial advantages
that landscaping achieves, accord
ing to the American Association
of Nurserymen.
Today's landscaping serves such
multiple purposes as providing
privacy, comfort, and higher real
estate values.
Whole neighborhoods have up
graded the selling price of their
homes by group planning the land
scaping for a complete street or
area.
Landscaping costs around 3 or
4 per cent of the total value of
the property, and when complet
ed, often will increase the value
of the home as much as 15 to
20 per cent.
It is interesting to note that
even with the increased price,
landscaped homes sell faster.
Something every homemaker
should also know, is that tax of
ficials consider it a permanent
improvement to the property: the
cost to be deducted from the sell-

All segments Of the
home improvement - moderniza
tion industry are now banding to
gether in an effort to help home
owners undertake needed repair-
remodel projects through the U1C
Home Improvement Council, per-1
manent successor to Operation
Home Improvement.
OHI, which became a national
by-word during its two-year ex
istence, was, as is H1C, comprised
of manufacturers of all types of
building materials and home
equipment, dealers, contractors,
lenders and others on the local
level.
The "Better Your Living"
slogan of Old, familiar to
many thousands of homeowners,
has been retained by the new
organization.
The Council, its national level
members and its local members
are dedicated to helping home
owners halt the deterioration o(
this nation's 40 million homes in
need of repair, and to making it
easier for them to buy the ma
terials and services of the repair-remodel-replace
industry.
Established as a permanent or
ganization to promote better liv
ing through home improvement,
H1C will, through a variety of
methods, alert homeowners ev
erywhere to the need for, ease of,
and benefits from modernization
and improvement.
Local businessmen who are
sincerely interested in helping
their customers bring today's con
veniences to yesterday's dwelling
unit will display the IllC member
ship seal, symbol of responsible
counsel and helpful service.
