To Visit Reds

Giant Studios Appear Doomed
As Movie Business Decreases

HOLLYWOOD (UP) Film-
town's giant studios seem to be
heading for extinction and their
own pictures sold to television
are pushing them toward the
exits.
Oddly, nobody In Hollywood
seems to care about their pass-
ins.
Republic and RKO already have
perished, leaving only six major
lots MGM, 20th Century - Fox,
Universal International, Warner
Brothers, Paramount and Colum
bia. AU six are producing TV
films to keep the cameras roll
ing. Independent producers have
taken up some of the slack at the
studios. At the recent Academy

picture, has divorced her husband
on grounds of voluntary abandon
ment.
Judge J. B. Hicks granted the
divorce yesterday to Grace Meta
lious, 33, in Russell County Circuit
Court.
Mrs. Metalious testified that her
husband, George, 33, voluntarily
abandoned her on Oct. 14, 1956.
They were married in 1943. Meta
lious was listed as a resident of
Massachusetts.
The judge barred remarriage
except to each other for 60 days.
No mention was made of property
settlement, money or the three
Metalious children, Marshal, 14,
Christopher Michael, 10, and
Cynthia, 7.

"Judy gave me the impression
she wanted to sue for divorce,"
Giesler told a newsman. "I can't
got very excited about it."

share the blame with outdated.

One bigwig says the movie down
fall began in 1940 when the gov
ernment forced divorcement of
studios and theaters, ruling a
company which made a picture
could not own the theaters in
which it was shown.
Some blame the passing of the
"star system," saying too few
youngsters have been built to the
heights occupied by the Gables,
Garbos, Tracys and Harlows.
Rising costs of movie - making
add to the havoc, says the head
of a major studio. "We can't keep
turning out five and six million
dollar pictures that dont return
the cost,
Twenty years ago a picture
costing a million dollars was
super-colossal. Today B pic
tures can t be made for less.
In 1936, the Klieg-lighted peak
of film production, Hollywood
turned out a total 621 epics with
an additional 142 reissued all
but a fraction of them produced
by major studios. Last year, 378
pictures were made only 118 by
the studios. Subtract from that 89
movies filmed abroad.
The pinch is reflected in pink
slips. Staffs have been hacked
drastically. Unemployment offices
are turning up sound men, ex
tras, featured players, electri
cians, grips and other movie spe
cialists. Much as they point to vague
reasons for their woes, movie
makers can't duck responsibility
for selling old films to television.
And sell them they have a grand
total of 3,144 pre-1948 films.
The total does not include Co
lumbia which refuses to divulge
its TV sales.
The big studios got something
in the neighborhood of $150 mil
lion tor the pictures. Heres a
breakdown:
U-I Leased 550 pictures to
Screen Gems for $20 million on a
seven-year lease.
MGM Leased 725 pictures to
individual TV stations for an ap
proximate $40 million.
Paramount Sold 725 pictures to
Music Corp. of America for $35
million.
Warners Sold 752 pictures to
PRM Inc. for $21 million.
20th-Fox Sold 390 pictures to
National Telefilm Assns. for $5
million, maintaining 40 per cent
of the stock and 45 per cent of
the gross income.
Columbia No figures.
Most of the pictures were made
in the days when each studio pro
duced 52 pictures a year enough
to provide their theaters with a
new bill every week.
Many movie people believe the
line between survival and demise
of the major studios lies in the
hefty backlog of films made since
1948.

owned plant 16 miles north of De
troit last November after the Rus-

Things were humming then, but
in a quiet sort of way. The work

Redstone ballistic missiles for the
Army.
I revisited the plant, still under
secrecy wraps, after the Army
put up our Explorer.
I sensed a big difference. There
are more workers. The operation
is spreading from half-use of the
plant and soon will take over all
the 2,100,000 square feet of floor
space. Everybody seems more re
laxed ano happy and smiling.
I also noted the stepped-up pro
duction tempo. The clatter of
hammers and power tools mingles
with the hissing sound of high-
pressure air tests 3,500 pounds
per square inch.
They're moving out equipment

Going into production is the
Jupiter 1,500-mile-range missile
big brother to the Redstone, with
a range of 200 miles phis.
The workers are jubilant over
Jupiter. It means the present
work force of some 5.500 soon will
De increased to s.ooo. About a
fourth of the employes are en
gineers and most of the rest are
highly skilled.
The main reason for the hannv
smiles is the feeling among the
workers they had a part in the
success of putting Explorer into
orbit. A modified Redstone was

The Jupiter-C satellite vehicle
was assembled by the Army BaM
ustic Missile Agency in Hunts-
ville. Ala., but tome of the com
ponents and know-how came from
here.
Chrysler was awarded a new

ary for production of Redstones
and Jupiters.
Missiles require precision work
manship. They don't roll off as
sembly lines.
But, as near as they can, mass
production techniques are being
applied to turning out Redstones
and parallel assembly areas are
being set up to turn out Jupiters
in the same manner.

On Vanguard
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. Wl-
The Navy has remedied a propel
lant shortage that helped delay a
test launching of the Vanguard
satellite rocket.
Other difficulties minor elec
trical troubles and balky valves
and other "plumbing" that also
served to prevent a launching
planned for early this week have
not yet been eliminated.
The Navy still hopes to, launch
the Vanguard before the week
end, and thus leave the way clear
for the Army to attempt to send
a second Explorer satellite in
the nose of a Jupiter-C rocket
into an orbit next week.
The Vanguard rocket awaiting
launcn day will carry a minia
ture satellite sphere in its nose,
although the main purpose will
be to test the three Vanguard
stages in flight. The Navy pro
gram also provides for the pos-
sibuity of establishing the 6.4-inch
sphere in an orbit. The Navy's
first major effort to launch a
satellite a 20-inch sphere is ex
pected in about a month.
The propellant in short supply
one of the seven propellants used
in the three-stage Vanguard was
propane.
The gas Is used for the auxiliary
jets that control the second stage
of the Vanguard when it is coast
ing, at a speed of 9,000 miles an
hour, after its engine burns out
140 miles above the earth.
A new supply was trucked in.
How the shortage developed was
not made clear.
Japan, China
Pact Reported
TOKYO W-Advisers from Pei-
ping said 12 Japanese industrial
ists and Red China signed a five-
ear trade agreement today under
fhich 280 million dollars worth of
Japanese steel materials will be
bartered for Chinese iron ore and
coal.
Radio MIK and the Kyodo news
service said the pact was sisned
in Peiping by Yoshihiro Inayama,
head of the private Japanese dele
gation, and a representative of
Red China's mining industry cor
poration.
NHK said each group is to ship
28 million dollars worth of ma
terials to the other in the first
year, 1958. Japanese -Chinese
trade is based on such nongovern
ment agreements in the absence
of diplomatic relations between
Ihe Tokyo and Peiping govern
