JACK MINKLER
Man Displays
Old Sword
Jack Minkler, employe of Car-Ad-Co,
will send photographs of an
old sword to various museums and
California authorities in the hope of
establishing identity of the unusual
blade he owns. The instrument
once belonged to his father, Frank
Minkler, onetime resident of Ne
braska, who bought the sword rom
a brother-in-law, the finder, for
half a dollar.
The sword, complete with its ori
ginal brass knuckle guard, is be
lieved to be of Spanish origin. The
curved blade, deeply pitted from
lying covered for many years in
the earth, is 30 inches long by one
and one-eight inces in width, was
plowed up from a field in Nebraska
in 1901. Rust had eaten into the
edge but the rapier-like point was
unharmed.
The metal of the rusty blade was
extremely hard and could not be
touched by the old time grind
stone. Later it was cleaned with
chemicals. H bears no identifica
tion nor marks of any kind.
The sword was found in what
was once the Otoe Indian Reserva
tion. Some historians suggest it
could have been left as early as
1542 by an exploring party, pos
sibly one of Coronado's which pen
etrated into country that is now
Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri in
search of the riches in gold which
they ncvep found.'Pieces of armor,
and other items supporting this the
ory, have been found near Prairie
Rock in Kansas which bear Span
ish inscriptions.
The only other of identical de
sign was owned by a veteran of
the Revolutionary War, a Col. Ben
jamin Moore.
GRANGE NEWS
LOST RIVER
Lost River Grange. No. 846, held
the second in its winter series of
card games Friday, February 21,
and the high score for the wom
en's prize was taken by Ora Gren
ger. Next high in women's play
was won by Cora Woodward.
The men s high was won by Harv
ey Kinney and the next high score
was by M. Taylor.
The high scores at the conclu
sion of the series of games on both
men and women's play will receive
the season prize and second high
will go to the man or woman fin
ishing next in each division. There
is also a prize for double pinochle
each evening of cards.

Friday evening, March 7. in the
Grange Hall in Olene. The public
is invited.
Unions Merge
In Michigan
GRAND RAPIDS. Mich. tfl -The
marriage of the AFL and
CIO in Michigan was an accom
plished fact today.
But reluctant kinsmen, of the
weaker AFL were still holding on
to a dowry of some $171,000.
Aides of AFL -CIO President
George Meany, who ordered the
merger, officiated here at the
blending of the AFL Michigan
Federation of Labor and the state
HO into the Michigan State AFL
CTO. No one showed up to say no and
it was done in comparative har
mony. Meany's aide Peter M. McGavin
will try to do something tomorrow
about collecting the AFL dowry
from the MFL which balked at a
merger but was unsuccessful in
an attempt to block it. A court
fight on the issue is expected.
The State CKO Council, with a
membership of about 600,000 com
plied with .Meany's order to turn
over its charter and assets of l'i
million dollars.
The MFL, which claims a mem
bership of some 300,000. has re
fused to yield its charter and
funds, it ordered a boycott of the
merger convention but delegates
representing some 125.000 MFL
members turned out and joined in
an overwhelming vote for merger.
The Michigan merger 40th
among the states sets a pattern
with other states, such as Rhode
Island and New Jersey, which
have been slow to merge on the
state level. After merger on the
national level Dec. 5, 1955. state
and local groups were allowed
two years to merger voluntarily.
PROVES POINT
STERLING. Colo. Wl Sheriff
Vernon Hastings Jr. was voted the
best dog-caller in the Sterling
Lions Club and wasted no time
proving to the other members he
deserved the honor. One by one,
the members demonstrated their
ability at calling dogs. When Has
tings whistled, his doe appeared
out ot nowhere.
Malin Garden Club will resume
their regular meetings on Wednes
day, February 26, at 2 p.m. in the
community hall. Anyone interested
is invited to attend. A colored film
on African insects will be shown
by Lee McFarland. Mrs. Walter
Stastny and Mrs. Ralph Stearns
are hostesses.
Choir Jan Elmore, Malin, will
appear with the 60 member a cap-
pella choir of Lewis and Clark
College on Saturday. March 8, at
the Klamath Falls First Presby
terian Church. The group will
make a 13 day tour and travel as
far east as Salt Lake City,

cal entertainment and a movie en
titled "Knowing's Not Enough" will
be attended by Southern Pacific
officials, members of the city coun
cil and the townspeople. It will
mark the presentation of a safety
award to the employes of Shasta
Dvision, Southern Pacific Com
pany, for the highest safety record
of the system's H) divisions.
J. W. Corbett, SP vice president,
and M. A. Nugent, safety superin
tendent, both of San Francisco, will
present the safety plaque to A. W.
Kilborn, division superintendent.
