recipe contest,
has been cooking
since she
was 10.

I N a big family of good cooks and hearty eaters. Linda
Yungling was just a small nuisance in the kitchen
when, at 10, she began adding water to ready-mix
cakes and fighting her way to the oven. Later, when she
gained confidence (and no one was looking), she tried real
recipes. Even this wasn't enough.
"If I liked some ingredients (like walnuts), I'd add more
than the recipe called for," she remembers. "Sometimes I'd
throw things in that weren't even in the recipe,,
or ignore things that were."
- Linda was sixth of eight children in a pio
neer California family (her great-grandfather
crossed the plains in a Conestoga wagon), and
her early experiments were tolerated with be
nign amusement by her mother and -older
sisters. Now 15, she's getting more respect.
It started a few months ago when one of
Linda's endless experiments produced a wal
nut cookie topped with coconut macaroons.
Sometime later a reporter for the Sacramento
Union appeared nt the Yunglings' home in
suburban Fair Oaks and announced that
Linda's creation had won Familv Weekly's
national recipe contest for teen-agers.
Mrs. Yungling took the news in stride ("All my daugh
ters are good cooks," she says casually), but for Linda it
was like a fairy tale. She had never been farther East than
Reno, Nev., and her grand prize included a five-day all
expense trip to Chicago.
Linda and Mrs. Yungling stayed at the world-famous
Drake Hotel on Chicago's beautiful Lake Shore Drive, had
dinner in the Drake's exclusive Camellia House (Linda
knew enough French to order steak from the menu),
shopped along State Street and. among other things, saw
"The Diary of Anne Frank." Mike Todd's "Around the
World in 80 Days." England's Royal Ballet, the Lincoln
Park Zoo, the Art Institute, and a real miracle! had
orchestra seats to the fabulous musical, "My Fair Lady."
On Sunday they attended services in the tower chapel of
Chicago's renowned First Methodist Church.
Did all this inspire the California miss to devote more
time to her cooking so she might some day become u
world-famous culinary expert?
"Oh. no." says Linda, an "A" student in high school, "I'm
going to be an engineer!"
