If he maintains his present scor
ing pace, Elgin Baylor of Seattle
University will top the 826 points
which gave him the Pacilic North
west leadership among college
basketball players in 1957.
A year ago Baylor closed out
the season with 82B points, col
lected in 27 games. At present he
has 622 and is averaging 32.7,
with seven games left to go in
the regular season and at least
one assured in post-season play
But in his recent tilts his av
erage has been closer to 40 and
a thousand-point season is not im
possible. The only previous thou
sand-pointer was chalked up in
1952 by another Seattle U. star
when All America Johnny O'Brien
posted 1051.
Seattle Pacific's Loren Ander
son edged into second place with
a total of 482, just one point more
than David Gardner had collect
ed lor Northwest Nazarene when
the books closed for the week
Saturday. Anderson also topped
me list in tree throws, convert'
ine 172 to Baylor's 160.
Two other players passed the
400-point mark, Chuck Curtis of
Pacilic Lutheran with 452 and Bill
Hollingsworth or Southern Oregon
with 426. Washington's Doug
Smart was sixth with 389, head
ing the Pacific Coast Conference
contingent. At his heels with 386
was Idaho s Gary Simmons.

The fired-up KU Pelicans tapered
off today after a solid week of de
fensive drills aimed at preparing
them for Ashland's "ball-control"
Grizzlies, who meet the Pels in a
two-game Southern Oregon Confer
ence series Friday and Saturday
at Pelican Court.
Coach Don Megale has directed
his efforts with the thought in mind
.hat a ball control club can t
possibly beat you, if they never
get ahead. While this shouldn t pre
sent a great problem to the Peli
can sharpshooters they remember
well a recent game against these
very same Grizzlies when the
Whitebirds had to hustle to over
come a 44-41 deficit with only two
minutes lelt in the game. The Ash
land crew had evidently found the
iront, running to their liking, be
cause it took an all out overtime
aflort to finally subdue them, 55-54.
It is an impossibility for anv
Grizzly opponent to loaf with safe
y. In addition to remembering
neir last game with liarl Iba s
crew the Pels are definitely aware
.hat the series is especially im-

Hebert Brothers Rated Top
In Texas Open Golf Tourney
SAN ANTONIO iffi-The golfing
Heberts Jay and Lionel were
eyed today as likely producers of
the champion in the $15,000 Texas
Open.
The brothers from Louisiana
Jay now registers from Sanford,
Fla., however were given top
ratings as 150 golfers moved out
in the opening round.
Jay is defending champion here
and has been playing fine golf all
winter, missing two first places
by a single stroke.
Lionel has just won his first
stroke play tournament the
Tucson Open and considers
himself at the peak of his career.
Both are ace bad weather play
ers too. Rain, sleet and snow have
made Brackenridge Park's 6.490
yard par 71 course hazardous.
There was the threat of bad
weather again later in the week.
Jay Hebert won 'the champion
ship in a driving rain last year.
Mike Souchak won it in 1955 and
set a PGA record of 257 for 72
holes while playing three rounds
in tain and bitter cold.
Then there's that noted second
place finisher Jimmie Demaret
who is considered the best bad
weather player of them all. He
has been second here three times.
Demaret's runner-up complex is
equaled by Doug Ford, another
of the big money winners, who
has been a bridesmaid here three
times too.
The field also includes E. J.
Harrison, Jack Burke, Frank
Stranahan and most of the other
stars of the tournament trail. The
leading absentee is Ken Vcnluri,
winner of two tourneys this winter,
who is passing up the Texas Open
to practice for the National Open
at Tulsa. .
