Cold Weather In Florida
Cuts Tourist Price Rates
MIAMI, Fla. (iB-PIush vaca-
lions in Florida dropped within
range ot the average tourist this
winter as resort hotel operators
scraped for business made scarce
by bad weather.
. Three freezes, wind storms and
torrential rains added up to the
worst season for tourists within
recollection of the Miami Weather
Bureau. Business was off 20 per
cent.
The bottom was reached yester
day when the mercury plunged to
28.
Swank hotels which formerly
charged $iJ a day per room and
turned away takers have offered
rates of $11 to $15 per person,
sometimes including breakfast
and dinner.
Hotels placed ads in Northern
newspapers offering the rare low
prices, with extras. One promised
that the hotel would pay for the
wife s round trip by airplane if a
couple would make a reservation
(or 10 days longer.
The weather, which brings Flor
ida a billion dollar a year tourist
business. Is blamed almost exclu
sively for the slowdown. Few
think the national business slump
has very much to do with it.
Some, however, think the open
ing of swank gambling clubs in
Havana, Cuba, only 200 miles
south of here, are partly responsi
ble. The most recent blow from the
weather came early this week
when temperatures dropped below
freezing virtually throughout the
I' lorida resort areas.
Hut by yesterday afternoon the
sun was burning away the cold
and wary sunbnthers were
trickling back to the water.

Findings Of Recent Study
On Common Cold Related
NEW YORK (UP) After the
temperature changes suddenly,
people are more likely to catch
colds than at other times. And
people who live in close quarters
with children are more likely to
catch colds than people who don't.
Both these statements were
more or less proved in one of
the most thorough efforts to date
to find out how the germs of the
common cold and of similar re
spiratory infections get about and
why some people are more sus
ceptible to them than others.
It was shown again that we ac
quire some kind of immunity to
the common cold as we progress
from babyhood into adulthood.
But it is an extremely tricky, un
reliable immunity. For example,
the demonstrable immunity be
stowed by just one cold hardly
lasts any time at all.
Yet, the new study found, chil
dren under five who have never
been out in the world, really, to
pick up all kinds of germs are
the most susceptible to the com
mon cold and similar germs. Chil
dren over five those who are
going to school and acquiring
immunities by acquiring and con
quering germs are less suscepti
ble and become even less as they
age. Adults, are the least sus
ceptible. The new study was somewhat
similar to the classic one con
ducted' in ' Cleveland some five
years ago, in that family units
were studied rather than individ
uals as individuals. After all, the
family is the unit of intimacy
and intimacy helps all germs to
get around. But the Cleveland
study was of definitely upper
class people, who lived in size
able houses set apart in size&blc
grounds.

"working class" district of Lon-

were watched by the scientists for
two years. Every two weeks
throat and nose swabs were taken
of every individual in every unit
and, of course, the appearance of
a cold or a respiratory infection
of any kind was a scientific five
alarm. The scientific team was headed
by Dr. F. S. W. Brimblecombe
who has an international reputa
tion in this public health field
epidemiology. At all times there
were 45 to 50 family units under
study and the idea was to find
out who introduced the cold into
the family group, who in the
group was most likely to catch
it once it was introduced and
what living conditions encouraged
its spread within the group.
Only over-crowding was def
initely pinned down as a condition
which helped the germs to spread.
There was some indication that
the young children who were poor
ly clod were more susceptible
than the children who weren't,
but that wasn't a definite
conclusion.
