Doctor Relaies Findings
On Tranquilizer Studies

NEW YORK (UP)-Tranauiliz.
ing drugs have been exonerated
of a suspicion that in some peo
pie they cause untranquil depres
sions. The suspicion has been
growing in medical circles. The
exoneration comes from Dr. Frank
J. Ayd, Jr., who investigated it in
70 persons who, were suffering
from what some itioctors now call
, drug-induced depression
Of the 70, he found that 23 were
not victims of true depression but
of "pseudo-depression." They were
; ' languid "and discouraged," but
,, had lost - neither appetite nor
weight. Nor were they self-dep-
. recatory, . remorseful or troubled
1iy morbid thoughts," Dr. Ayd
Mid. - . . ;
The reason they 'were discour
aged was because they felt a las
situde which "interferred with
the maintenanee of their self-imposed
standards." This "lassi
tude," he said, was due to the
tranquilizers they had taken. They
were "over-tranquilized" the dos
es were too big.
The remainder of the 70 per
sons wno nad been referred to
him, since he is a psychiatrist, by
other physicians, were suffering
irom true depression in the osv
. chiatric sense that is. depression
which is based entirely or almost
entirely on hidden workings of the
imnow. . ...... . ... ( .j

toms tne olnors did not bave, such
as insomnia, early morning

ing spe)ls,; hopelessness, anxiety
attacks,' oosossive fears, Impaired
concentration and memory, inde
cisiveness, loss of interest in us
ual activities,, and suicidal tend
encies,?'. : .,; j. .
But, soatimied Ayd. in reporting
16 the Medical Society of the State
of New York, they had all been
subject to attacks of depression
before- thoir doctors prescribed
tranquilizing drugs for them, and
many .had, attacks after the tran
quilizers had been withdrawn.
Of the 23 persons with what Ayd
diagnosed as "pseudo-depression,"
only eiRht per cent had psychiat
ric care, but of the 47 with gen
uine (psychiatrically) depression,
BS per cent had had it. The drugs
prescribed were, . Jn the main,
members "of 'this '-rauwelfia family
of. tranquilizers. In 43 of the 70
they were prescribed to relieve
nign blood pressure; in the others

they were prescribed to lessen
mental tension.
Ayd, who practices in Baltl
more, is well known medically for
his studies of the reactions of peo
ple to tranqullizing drugs. In
previous paper he warned doctors
that true depression is not easily
recognized and tranquilizers
should not be prescribed for the
truly depressed because they can
accentuate tne depression.
,11 o w e v e r, the "pseudo-depressed",
can be continued on
tranquilizers if the dosage is re
duced and a stimulating drug it
added to the medication, he said
in his new paper.
The bigger question, he stated
this way: "Can a depression be
attributed solely to whatever drug
such patients may. be taking at
me time or are factors other than
the drug responsible for the de
pression?" He answered it thus
' Until more conclusive evidence
is available It cannot be stated
authoritatively that tranquilizers
per se are uepressogenic.

WASHINGTON OB Vice Presi

in I960, said today that the party's
outlook is on the upgrade now,
"We reached our low point In

adding that Eisenhower's message
to Congress "gave the party a shot
in tne arm.
He said a closed-door confer
ence of the Republican National
Committee here last week had
raised hopes of recapturing con
trol of the Senate and House in
this year's elections. Democrats
now hold majorities In both ends

The Republican conference was
followed by a weekend meeting of
tne Democratic Advisory Council
which issued a series of state
ments criticizing the administra
tion on economic, defense and
foreign policy stands.
The Democrats said the Eisen
hower administration had adopted
aeteatist attitude toward the
business recession.
The council also voted 11-2 for a
statement urging that Congress
give "renewed consideration" to
more civil rights legislation, to ex

Space Age Advances Hit
Sensitive Chord In Churches
By GEORGE W. CORNELL
AP Religion Writer
Man-made flight through the

chora in the churches.
"Handwriting in the sky." some

many see it, can be either helpful

In Chicago, a group of pastors
and Midwestern business leaders
pondered how spiritual resources
in the nation "must be mobilized
to save us." The conference is
sponsored by the University of
Chicago.
Victory and survival, the
sponsors say, will come only
through deeper understanding of
the laws which govern the hearts
and minds of men and the prac
tical applications of these laws to
national life and our international
relations.
In church circles, two opposite
tendencies have been stressed as
the possible effects of the new
technological developments on
faith:
1. A heightened sense of rever
ence and humility before the
grandness of the universe, with a
more vivid realization of God's
infinite supremacy over it.
2. A rash of intensified mater
ialism, stressing sheer mechani
cal prowess to the neglect of spir
itual values.
Such an "exaltation of science
above all other forms of power,
said the Rev. Dr. 0. Frederick
Nolde, a noted Lutheran theolo
gian of Philadelphia, would mean
falling into the trap of pro
fessed atheistic materialists.
It would be vain indeed, he
added, to try to outdo a system
by becoming like it.
As noted by the Rev. Handel
Brown, a Presbyterian pastor of
St. Cloud, Fla., the Bible tells of
man s first effort to reach into
the stratosphere.
