The Merrill Dairy Club had its
first 4-H meeting at the Ray Hob-
son,, home January 13.

"oh! so heavenly fur stoles, capes
and jackets," furriers are welcom
ing a comparatively new fur on
North American markets, the
coypu, known colloquially as nu
tria. The animals are being raised by
Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Wilson and on
a lesser scale by C. E. Hansen,
operating with Wilson as partner.
The aquatic "rodents of the otter
family, native to South America,
have been produced on the Wilson
ranch for three and one half years.
The animals have short, soft.
brown fur, commercially mis
named "otter." They have a short
gray muzzle and red incisors.
Their nostrils are so set that they
can breathe when all immersed
except for the tip of the nose.
They ' are somewhat smaller
than the beaver with a slender,
rat-like tail. In their native state
they dwell entirely in ponds or
lakes, burrowing into banks or
building platform-like nests in
reeds on the shore. Their call is
like the cry of a human in pain.
They are vegetarians, eating var
ious varilies of vegetables and
greens.
Wilson has wire pens with man
made hovers for "nesting" and
hiding. Water in varying depths is
provided in the pens.
The animals have a gland be
neath the tail similar to that of
the skunk but with no objection
able odor to the secretion. It is an
exceptionally oily, water-proof sub
stance used by the nutria to oil its
fur. Wilson has developed a hand
cream from the oil, similar to
lanolin, but richer which is be
ing patented for sale. The oil is
removed at ; pelting time.
Currently after the pelting sea
son last fall, the Wilson's have 145
animals of various ages, both
breeders and young. About 250 ani'
mals were pelted in 1957. The
green furs are shipped to the Si
mon Fur Company in New York
City. Pens are taken when tne
animals "are around nine months
old. They become adult when 13
to 15 months. Weight varies from
15 to 40 pounds. Green pelts this
year depending on quality, brought
from $12 to $20. The fur, normally
a dark brown, can be successfully
