Fire Crews
Gain On Blaze
LOS A.T;i:I,KS Mi-Fire fiRht
crs reported today that they were
makinR steady progress in efforts
lo control the 25.0(H) acre San
Gabriel Mountains forest fire.
The wind died during the night
and the humidity rose, conditions
which greatly aided the fire-fighting
lurce of 1.400 men working
along a SVinile perimiter of the
huge lire burning lo a consider
able extent in almost inaccessible
terrain.
In some of the most rugged sec
lions where the fire was burning
within itself, crews were given a
rest during the night because the
terrain is so rough their work
could not be effective in darkness.
On Ihe more accessible sections
men and tractors and bulldozers
continued the job of getting a fire
break gouged out around the fire.
The U.S. Forest Service said the
lire has deslrnyed 2 million dol
lars worth of watershed. The fire
is 30 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
