NY Garbage
'King' Jailed
MINEOLA. N. Y. I-Garbage
truck king Vincent Squillante was
jailed today on an indictment
charging extortion.
Squillante, self-styled godson ot
the murdered mobster Albert
Anastasia. was held in a cell
pending arraignment later in the
day along witn an inaicica Dromer
and an associate.
Squillante, 40, is accused of ex
tortion and attempted extortion in
the garbaqe collection industry in
Nassau County, a Long Island
commuting suburb of New York
City.
Allegedly the racket boss of the
so million-dollar-a-year garbage
and rubbish pickup business in the
New York metropolitan area, he
took the Fifth Amendment last
Friday in Washington. He refused
to answer questions before the
Senate committee investigating
rackets in the fields of laoor and
management.
The county grand jury, meeting
in an extraordinary night session,
handed up indictments shortly be
fore midnight against Squillante.
liis brother. Murrain, and C'srmen
de Cabia, president of the Nassau
Suffolk County Cartmen's Assn.,
an employer group.
All three were charged with at
tempted extortion, and Vincent
Squillante and De Cabia with ex
tortion also, in connection with
garbage carting contracts at
Milchel Air force Base and its
nearby barracks area.
The indictment charges that An
geio Recchia, who formerly had
a contract to haul the Air Force
base garbage, gave up the con
tract to the Squillante group and
paid $3,900 to Vincent Squillante
alter being threatened with being
forced out of business.
Immediately afler the grand
jury returned the indictments.
County Judge Paul Widlitz issued
bench warrants to police, who
picked up the defendants at their
homes.

DORRIS Two damage suits
have been filed in Siskiyou Su
perior Court against the Butte
Valley Irrigation District of .M:tc
doel. Carita and Frank Oliver of Mt.
Hebron charge in a complaint that
Eldon Kaylor. a district employe,
allowed ditches and waterways
"to become and remain in a
dangerous and defective con
dition," causing the Olivers', land
to be flooded and doing $3,500
damage.
In another complaint, Paul and
Frances Cavener of Mt. Hebron
ask $300 for damage to their rye
crop, plus $700 damage to their
land as a result of flooding.

cific today announced formation of
a research group to examine criti
cal areas in rail freight transporta
tion. The organization will immediate
ly look into problems of shippers
and railroads in the Pacific moun
tain states. It will be headquar
tered in San Francisco and will
he administered by the Western
Traffic Association, under the di
rection of an advisory board of
rail traffic vice presidents.
