The 48-year-old principal is a
Negro. His 500 pupils all are
white, in classes ranging from
mnaergaricn to tun grade.
But Caldwell says he never feels
alone. One reason is the love
notes.
"Dear Mr. Caldwell," wrote one
liitle girl, "I love you."
Her card was embroidered with
flowers and a bright-red heart.
Another pupil was leaving the
school and this was her farewell
to the principal.
"I will miss you. I love you.
From Lynda."
"This is democracy In action,"
says the broad-shouldered man,
who believes he is the nation's
only Negro principal of an all-
white school. ,
"Koxhill is a living example of
how people can get along," he
says, adding he never has exper
ienced an unpleasant moment
since coming to the school a year
ago.
Caldwell came here from Tope
ka, Kan,, where he was director of
Negro schools. ,
"I have always felt' right at
home," says Caldwell.
"1 think the people of the Rox
hill area want someone who is in
terested in the welfare of their
children. 1 don't think they are
concerned about the color of his
skin."
And Caldwell's subordinates
have nothing but praise for him.
Color never has meant a
thing," says Mrs. L. D. Willough
by, u third grade teacher.
'It's an honor and a privilege
to be associated with Mr. Cald
well," comments kindergarten
teacher Mrs. Charles E. L. Per
kins.
And the school's secretary, Mrs.
Floyd Thompson, adds: .
"I'm working with a fellow
American."

New Threat From Turkey
Charged By Syrian Leader
DAMASCUS, Syria (UP)-Acting
Foreign Minister Khalil Kallas re
newed his complaints against Tur
key Tuesday night and said he
would take the matter to the Unit
ed Nations unless Turkey with
drew threatening troop concentra
tions before Christmas.
He indicated at a two-hour news
conference ' the withdrawal time
limit would be fixed for Dec. 15
when the General Assembly is
scheduled to adjourn.
Syria has charged that Turkey,
with United States support, is
planning an attack. Turkey and
the United States have denied the
charges.
Kollas said Syrian information
was that there had been no change
in Turkish troops strength along
the border and that the Turks
were not engaged in maneuvers as
Turkey has claimed.
Kallas said border violations and
shooting affrays had increased
since the U.N. debate on the situ
ation and that Turkish troops were
carrying out actions "which bring
them right up to the border it
self." He also disclosed that first esti
mates of the cost of the recent
Syrian-Soviet economic agreement
was two billion Syrian pounds
(about 520 million dollars), with
less than half to be used for fi
nancing , machinery, equipment
and raw materials.

(An Amman, Jordan, dispatch
said Jordan's radio stations in Je
rusalem and Amman had counter
attacked vigorously in the running
battle of words with Egypt.
(Cairo Radio broadcasts have
accused King Hussein of Jordan of
being a "traitor" to the Arabs for
allegedly negotiating with the Is
raelis, a report denied by both Is
rael and Jordan. The latest Jor
danian broadcast called Egyptian
President Gamal Abdel Nasser
and his government "agents of the
Kremlin" and "cowards and failures.")
