Disc Jockey Proud Of Top Heel' Title
CHICAGO UP Marly Faye is
Chicago's No. 1 heel.
And he's proud of it. He won
the title hands down in an un
popularity contest that was his
own brainchild.
"Honestly, I never dreamed I
was so unpopular," he said. "This
is my greatest moment."
With that; blonde TV performer
Kay Westfall crowned him with
a cardboard crown adorned with
gold-painted rubber heels.
Fayc himself is a television fig
ure and a radio disc jockey. Ad
. mittedly, he has . made a career
out of flouting the presents of
Dale Carnegie. Faye is not inter
ested in winning pals and making
people think he's peachy. But he's
a fast man with a snide remark.
He has an undeniable talent for
getting under people's skin. With
a voice compounded of equal
parts of gravel and insult, he
makes cutting comments about
such national institutions as
, Sophie Tucker and Bing Crosby.
"And that's about like desecrat
ing the American flag," he said.
His listeners react vigorously,
sometimes violently. On a street-

"I've had the windows in my
house smashed and the tires on
my car slashed," he said.
A teenager incensed by Faye's
castigation of rock and roll
heaved a rock at Faye's head. It
just missed, smashing a plate
class window instead.

'police guard. Yet Faye regards
! himself as a "healthy influence."

ity on me," he said. "I'm provo
cative.
With this his critics agree, but
they argue that he provokes raw
emotion instead of. thought. Like
when he snatched the wig from
his television guest's head.
Faye, a former fairgrounds
pitchman who sounds like it, can
be pleasant enough "off mike."
He said he began his career as
a thorn in the public's side five
years ago when he broke in as
a disc jockey on a local radio
station.

"The studio switchboard lit up
like a Christmas tree," Faye said.
"People were furious. But the
sponsor sold more sewing ma
chines in those 15 minutes than
he did in the previous two weeks."
That's one of Faye's unlathom
ables. He stirs people up, but he
sells and sells big.
Faye even displeases those who
agree with his outspoken opinions.
He detests rock and roll and Elvis
Presley. Yet people who detest
both may also dislike Faye.
Of Presley, Faye says: "Why
look at him? Go to the zoo. The
third bear on the left has more
talent."

"Farm Bureau Marketing Associa
tions at Work" to be held at the
Oregon Farm Bureau annual meet
ing at the Eugene Hotel in Eugene

Marketing Association, will speak
on "Order Buying."
Ted Hyde of Bly, chairman of
the Beef Commission Committee
for the Oregon Cattlemen's Associ
ation, will explain the proposed
state beef commission.
Dairymen are planning to go to
hear Oscar Hagg, OSC marketing
specialist, discuss "Proposed Na
tional Dairy Programs" and 0. K.
Beats, chief of the foods and dairy
division of the Oregon Department
of Agriculture, explain new state
statutes affecting the dairy indus
try, such as milk usage auditing,
Brucellosis control, milk regula
tions, and brand inspection.
In the promotional field. .Max
Cullen, assistant general manager
of the National Livestock and Meat
Board, will discuss meat promotion
and Glen Lay, executive secretary
of the Oregon Dairy Products Com
mission, will discuss expansion of
local dairy promotion.
Hay and feed utilization and
transportation will be discussed by
Ray Teal, OSC grain and seed
marketing specialist.

For Staying Away From TV

his reasons for skipping video.)

HOLLYWOOD (UP) "What
have you got against television?"
.No. not you me. What I mean
is. this is the question that I am
asked most frequently nowadays.
Because I don't appear on tele
vision, , 'most everyone I know
seems to think I must bear some
deep-seated grudge against the
medium.
Actually I have nothing against
television. I watch it all the time.
But I don't want to be seen on
it. And I have a lot of reasons.
As a matter of fact, I could write
a book about it. Oh, I know, you
have seen me on television on
the Edward R. Murrow program,
"The Secret Life Of Danny Kaye,"
the one about UNICEF and the
children all over the world.
But that wasn't what I would
really call appearing on television.
It was a filmed record of a trip
I made around the world for the
UN Children's Fund, not a "show"
as an entertainer.
Why won't I make that kind of
an appearance? For one thing, 1
enjoy my life very much the way
it is. I like making motion pic
tures. I enjoy making the stage
appearances I do. 1 get a great
thrill from my work for UNICEF.
But I can't do all this and tele
vision, too.
In television, it's possible to

take a complete unknown, sur
round him with top creative tal
ent, money and production and,
within four weeks, make him a
national rage a household word.
If this holds true, it also must
follow that in the same amount
of time, television can destroy
him.
Another point: A professional
and polished performer can do a
show on Broadway and be a
smash hit. He can run in that play
for years and gain an internation
al reputation. Yet one television
appearance good or bad by that
same performer will be seen by
more people than could ever see
him in a portrayal where he has
had months and years to arrive
at perfection.
Mind you. I'm not saying that
any of these points will keep me
off television permanently. I just
haven't made up my mind about
it yet. Nor -has anyone presented
me with a show that I. felt like
doing on TV.V

Prisoners Leave
For State Prison
Sheriff Murray Britton and dep
uty left Tuesday morning for Sa
lem where they will deliver three
prisoners to the state penitentiary.
Prisoners in transport were Bax
ter Hignite, sentenced to serve two
life terms on two counts of sec
ond degree murder involving the
October 12 gunshot slaying of a
Merrill couple; Woodrow Shaw,
sentenced to one year on charges
of revocation of probation involv
ing non-support charges, and Lar
ry Abbott, Klamath Falls man sen
tenced to not more than five years
on charges of larceny involving an
automobile.
