gerontological meeting. Gerontol
ogy is the scientific study of old
age.
According to Thompson, "if any
general eltect at all can be dis
cerned, it is that retirement leads
to an improvement in health."
He said that the study did find
mat many people in retirement
are in poor health. But, he said,
"it would seem that this can best
be understood in terms of poor
health leading to retirement and
not the reverse.
The study was based on infor
mation from people who have re-
urea as well as from doctors who
examined them.
In another speech, Lawrence D.
Corey of the University of Chi
cago, said that whether a person
makes an easy switch from work
ing to retirement is connected
with the type of job he held.
"The higher the group's occu
pation status." he said, "the
greater its adjustment is to aging
ana retirement.
In reporting these conclusions
from a study of retired people.
Corey said that a person's adjust
ment is not related to his marita
status or sex but is connected with
how long he went to school. The
better the education, he said, the
I better the adjustment.

Nixon Not
Clashing
In Race'
WASHINGTON (TV-There will
be no presidential primary colli
sions between Vice President Nix
on and Sen. Knowland (R-Calif)
outside of California in 1960, au
thoritative sources here say.
Knowland's decision, reported
to have been communicated to
close Washington associates, was
seen as a break for Nixon in his
own obvious but unannounced
campaign for the 1960 presidential
spot.
Any 1960 moves by Knowland
still would hinge on whether he
wins the California governorship
next year an objective which ap
peared until recently to be possi
ble only after a tough, intrs-party
struggle with incumbent Gov.
Goodwin Knight.
Knight, reportedly intends to
seek the Senate seat Knowland is
vacationing, leaving a clear field
for Knowland in the California
gubernatorial primary.
Friends say Knowland has not
made up his mind about trying
for the big prize in 1960, and ar
rived at his primaries decision
without consulting Nixon.
The reported Knight withdrawal
was seen as cheering news for
Nixon in that the vice president
thus avoids having to choose be
tween Knowland and Knight in a
California contest which could split
the state Republicans and throw
control to the Democrats.
Nixon still regards Knowland as
a likely presidential aspirant in
1960, sources here Say, but would
prefer to fight it out then with
Knowland as Republican governor
than to have a disorganized party
and possibly a Democratic gover
nor in their home state.
Nixon has not said he will seek
the presidential nomination, but
the vice president is considered
to have the inside track for the
1960 spot. President Eisenhower is
legally barred from seeking a
third term. ,
