Slayer Draws
Death Penalty

John Collins, a 32-year-old former
Marine convicted of the Samurai
sword slaying of Andrew K. Sto
len north of here March 21, Wed
nesday was told he will be hanged
at the state prison Dec. 3.
The date for Collins' execution
was set by Superior Court Judge
Hardyn B. Soul.
Collins, a former Puyallup milk
truck driver, was convicted of
slaying Stolen in front of Stolen's
motel near Milton. After his ar
rest Collins admitted slaying two
other persons, a waitress at Ft.
Knox, Ky., and a service station
attendant at Federal Way.

Teamsters Challenge Court

sters Union has challenged the
riaht of the courts to delve into
the internal affairs of labor or
ganizations.
The court-embattled union made
that contention Wednesday in an
answer to a rank-and-file mem
bers' suit challenging legality of
James R. Hoffa's election as the
union's new president.
Federal District Judge F. Dick
inson Letts has issued a tempo
rary restraining order barring
Hoffa from taking over the top job
in the nation's largest labor un
ion, pending further litigation in
the suit.
The rank-and-file group con
tends that more than half the del
egates to the recent teamsters
convention, which elected Hoffa
overwhelmingly to succeed Dave
Beck, were selected illegally and
hand-picked to rig the balloting
for Hoffa.
Both Hoffa and Beck have been
accused by the Senate Rackets
Investigating Committee of cor
ruption. The Teamsters Union main
tained in its answer Wednesday
that courts lack jurisdiction to

procedures.
The union also said the plain
tiffs failed to exhaust their ave
nues of possible appeals within
the union and came into court
with "unclean hands." The union
said some of the plaintiffs par
ticipated in local elections of con
vention delegates and did not pro
test at tne time.
The court case comes up again
before Judge Letts next Monday
on whether to continue the ban
against Hoffa's taking office and
whether to name a receiver to
take charge of the union tempo
rarily.
