Z.XPERTS of five nations have their eyes on some
high-stepping shrews who travel under such innocent
names as Edna, Charlotte, and Hazel. They're the hur
ricanes that whip out of the Caribbean around Autumn
each year and lay waste to our eastern shores and many
semitropical islands.
Meteorologists of the United States, Mexico,. Cuba,
French Guadaloupe, and British Jamaica are using modern
science to expose the secrets of one of nature's oldest
Jezebels. If they learn what makes hurricanes tick, they'll
be able to broadcast danger alerts more quickly, and per
haps even deflect a howler from its course.
American headquarters for hurricane hawkshawing is
at a former country club near Palm Beach, Fla. Using
by Roy Irwin
millions of dollars in Federal aid, weather experts on the
National Hurricane Research Project are ready to send
camera-carrying Navy rockets, as well as special WB-50
and B-47 "flying laboratories," into the eyes of hurricanes
to gather scientific data.
In addition, during the hurricane season, storm-detection
radar will measure atmospheric conditions, and over-all
research will be correlated and analyzed by electronic
brains. Special telecommunications systems will alert dan
ger areas within seconds after discovery of the approach
of hurricane conditions.
It will be a long, complicated meteorological study, but
researchers hope all their gadgets and statistics will
eventually take the wind out of any hurricane's sail.
