    SHE SAYS: (Continued)
rvEBY day in every way women
I make compromises. Thou
sands of them vote like their
husbands to avoid friction, and the
wise ones who don't, don't talk about
it. Women must dress in clothes
their husbands consider flattering
and must cultivate the people their
husbands like or consider important.
When John's mother or Aunt Hat
tie moves in for a month, John is
entitled to work nights at the office,
leaving his wife to play Mrs. Mesta
to his visiting clan. Moreover, John
likes to keep in touch with uncles,
cousins, and far-flung brothers, but
since he's busy, he expects his wife
to do the writing and calling. And
that, of course, means every bride
takes on "his" as well as "hers" in
the matter of relatives.
Compromising goes further than
this, however. If John's boss trans
fers him to a new city, John's wife
is expected to pack up and proceed
merrily, for John is "on the way up."
If John's boss moves him neither up
ward, onward nor outward, she must
rejoice in his stability, his solidity.
Even if John's wife would like to
help out by working, she'd better
not if it pricks his pride.
Look where you will, and you'll
see that woman's role is to "give,"
to adjust, to adapt, to compromise.
Do I object? No, for I've learned to
accept my servitude as inevitably as
death and taxes. But I once thought
naively that marriage was a partner
ship. If so, it's a strange one: the
wife does all the work and the hus
band gets all the profit.
