The queen

parade in
Tyler.
O most people, Texas
means cattle ranches
and oil wells, but the
Lone Star State also has a
good corner on the nation's
rose industry.
To prove it, the city of
Tyler annually stages the
Texas Rose Festival, the
Southwest's foremost floral
pageant. Tyler itself, easily
the largest rose-growing
area in the United States,
claims the title of Rose Cap
ital of the World.
The festival is held each
Autumn (Oct. 18-20 this
year) when Tyler's Munici
pal Rose Garden is in full
bloom. Highlights include a
Rose Parade, a Rose Show,
and of course, the crowning
of a Rose Queen. This year's
royal lady: winsome Miss
Kay Howard of Tyler.
