Dual-Purpose Room
Helped By Tricks
By KAY SHERWOOD
NEA Staff Writer
A room that's attractively dual-
purpose is almost a necessity in
Ismail quarters. Yet sometimes the
little chunk of floor space avail
able seems scarcely large enough
ko serve even one purpose.
If you want to include guest-
toom facilities in living room or
Icn. for example, the first prob
lem is what kind of sleeping
(equipment to have and where to
put it. Standard-sized sofa-bod com
binations may be too big to squeeze
nto trie space. Studio couch ar-
annements gobble up precious
wall space which might be need
ed for storage chests.
Designed to meet this dilemma
ae small - scale combinations.
These measure about 40 inches
overall and can seat a slim, com-
Ipatible couple when closed. Under
khe trimly upholstered exterior is
standard 33-inch mattress which
unfolds to make a comfortable
bed for one.
Because of its size, one of these
seats can be used in a free-stand-
ng arrangement much like an or-
linary chair or loveseat. Many

other use by covering the opened
out mattress with a decorative
spread, to provide extra seating
space wnen uiey emercain.
Styling of such combinations is
basic and simple. Depending on
choice of upholstery, it will blend
with either contemporary or pro
vincial surroundings.
Furnishings for any small room
wmch will be used more or less
around the clock must be care
fully planned. Otherwise it will
look overstuffed.
In the case of young apartment
dwellers, such furnishings must
also be planned with an eye-, to
future uses and present budgets.
One way to minimize the bulk
of storage chests in limited space
is to paint them the same color
as the walls. Solidly built, ready-to-paint
chests and open shelf units
are not expensive. And they lend
themselves to flexible arrange
ments and changes in color
schemes. Basic designs in these
units don't change much, so ad
ditions fit into the lineup wrthouU
looking out of key.
A much-used small room lends
soft,
and
itself to informal treatment
light-toned color schemes
small, precise patterns. ,
One room I saw treated this
way added to the illusion of more
space and openness with a grayed,
random-stone, patterned linoleum
on the floor. A multi-colored fiber
rug covering part of the floor
picked up the soft blue-green shade
oi tne upholstery and curtain fab
rtcs.
FRENCH "SPAIN"
The Spanish village of Llivia is
located in France. In a 1659 re
vision of the frontier, several Span
ish hamlets were granted to
Frahce, but Llivia refused to be
ceded and it has remained a Span
ish island in France for three
centuries, with a neutral road built
to connect it with the mother coun
try.
Hawaii was annexed to the
United States in 18!.

calves on farms January I, and the trend in the present cycle. The cyclical low
point is plotted as the first year of each cycle. Cattle numbers decreased January I,
1957, and the 1 957 slaughter rate and reduced calf croD Doint to a Drobable reduction
again in 1958. This cycle may follow about the same pah as previous cycles, but with a
