Replacing Windows
Simple Operation
A wild throw to first base, an
erring arrow, or some of the plain,
everyday hazards of frequent rais
ing and lowering of windows may
impose a job of replacing broken
window panes on the do-it-yourself
enthusiast. Good weather is the
best tunc to complete the task
Window glass is plentiful and
easy to get at this time of year.
Probably the oldest of all do-it-yourself
projects, replacing brok
en or cracked window panes, can
be done more elficicntly and made
to look like a professional job
REPLACING BROKEN or cracked window panes is prob
ably the oldest of all do-it-yourself projects.
by the home handy man if he fol
lows these suggestions:
1. When removing remaining
fragments of the broken pane, it
is wise to protect your hands with
heavy gloves. Knock out stubborn
pieces with a hammer.
2. Remove all particles of old
putty with a small chisel or heavy
screw driver, tapping the tool
with a hammer if necessary, to
remove hard putty. Use care so the
sash is not gouged. Pull out glaz
ier's points with pliers. (With met
al sash, remove glazier's clips or
unscrew metal beading or glazier's
strips.) A coat of linseed oil or
light paint on clean wood sash
will make the new putty adhere
closely and prevent it from becom
ing dry and crumbly.
3. Using a ruler, measure the
opening's dimensions in several
places to allow for any irregular
ities. Have the new glass cut one-
eighth to three-sixteenths of on
inch smaller than the opening for
easy installation. For small mulli
paned sash, single strength window
glass is adequate but for metal
sash and larger panes double
strength is recommended.
4. Apply a thin layer of putty
around the sides of the frame be
fore inserting the glass to help in
sure a good weather-tight seal.
5. Press new glass gently, but
firmly, into the putty cushion.
Holding the glass in place press
or drive tpe glazier's points into
the frame. Use three or four points
to a side on larger panes, two
on smaller. For metal sash, follow
same procedure, but apply chips,
beading or glazing strips with
screw driver.
6. Roll putty to pencil thickness

and the rolls end to end around
the sides of the sash. Using a
putty knife press the putty firmly
into position and then smooth it to
form a triangular bevel between
sash edge and glass.
7. A light application of water
with a soft paint brush will remove
putty smudges from the glass, or
if you prefer, allow the putty to
dry for a day or two and clean
smudges with turpentine. Alter put
ty has set, paint it to match
the trim.

keep their body weight and milk
production up! But, when you
supplement pasture with Purina
