Growth Hormone soaton
Announced By Scientist
NEW YORK (UP)-A University
of California scientist reported to
day the first isolation of growth
hormone from human and from
monkey pituitary glands.
Dr. C. H. Li, director of UC's
Hormone Research Laboratory,
told of this achievement at the
annual scientific sessions of the
American -Cancer Society. '
Li's work could be a major
breakthrough to the eventual use
of pituitary growth hormone in
human -disease. In the past,
growth hormone from cattle has
not been consistently effective in
humans.
LI said the new monkey growth
hormone is already being tested
for possible activity In man at the
National Cancer Institute. He said
it ' may eventually be useful in
many diseases, including dwarf
ism, cancer and other metabolic
conditions.
Li said preliminary work sug
gests that monkey and .human hor
mones are more or less similar.
There is a "great disparity" be-
ween them and the cattle hor
mone.
The next step is to work out the
structure of the hormones in the
iooe of learning how to "degrade"
cattle hormone and obtain its ac
tive core. This might then be ac
'.ive in man and hence useful in
treating disease.

Arab Demonstrators Run
Wild In Jerusalem Riots
PARIS m Amid reports of
continued Syrian unrest, France
protested to Syria and Jordan
Monday against Arab mob de
struction of French property in
three cities. The Arabs were try
ing to show their support for the
Algerian independence movement.
A dispatch from Damascus said
- security forces in Aleppo, the
commercial center of North Syria,
were reported to have fired Mon
day on "destructive elements"
who attempted to resume anti
French sabotage.
Demonstrators burned out the
white stone French consulate in
Jordan's sector of Jerusalem Sun
day, destroyed four buildings in
fire raids on French property ini
Aleppo and hurled stones through
plate glass windows of the French
embassy in Amman, Jordan's
capital.
More than 60 persons were in
jured in ' the attendant riots.
Though official'' reports Sunday
said one man was killed by Syrian
troop fire at Aleppo, a Syrian
government spokesman - denied
there was such a death. The in
jured there totaled 29. Military
authorities in Aleppo made 83 ar
rests. Foreign minister Christian Pin
eau called the ambassadors of
Syria and Jordan separately to his
Paris offices to register the dis
pleasure, of the French govern
ment. Only two Frenchmen are known
to have been injured in the three
incidents. These were wounded in
a shooting at the Jerusalem con
sulate. The mob actions developed from
a Sunday strike across the Arab
world backing Algerian rebels in
their 23-month-old war against
France and protesting the arrest
by a ruse an unscheduled plane
landing at Algiers of five rebel
chieftains.
