Russian Observers Watch
Nixon On Campaign Tour
LOS ANGELES (UP) - Three
Russian observers of Ihe U. S.
political campaign heard Vice
President Richard M. Nixon speak
twice today before leaving for San
Francisco and more observing.
The Russians sat on the side
lines this morning as Nixon ad
dressed a precinct workers' rally

Stocks Show
Some Gains
NEW YORK (UP) - Stocks
extended ' Friday's gains in in
creased turnover early today with
gains ranging over 2 points in
numerous issues.
-There were several individual
highlights, such as Newport Indus
tries which ran up 1 7-8 to 23 1-8
in the common, 4 to 80 in the
preferred on news of merger dis
cussions with Heyden Chemical.
Heyden added 1-8 to 16 7-8.
Du Pont and Allied Chemical
ran up around 2 points each in
the chemicals.
Magma and Kennecott were up

in the coppers. Alcoa rose more
than a point and Reynolds 2 points
in tne aluminums.

Singapore Quiets

easy calm in Singapore Monday
as the strife-torn colony passed
its first peaceful day since anti
government riots flared Thursday.
As police and troops patrolled
the city, authorities lifted the tight
curfew for four hours to permit
residents to attend to essential
business and buy food.
Chinese Communists reportedly
stoned some cars as thousands
hastened to the business district.
But there was no recurrence of
the Communist-led mass violence
which killed 16 persons and in
jured about 200.
Tide Traps Trio
Of Fishermen
SAN FRANCISCO (UP) Three
fishermen nearly drowned in Bris-
bane Lagoon Sunday, when a
strong tide and turbulent waters
overturned their nine-foot skiff.
Waters of the muddy laeoon
were lapping at the chins of the
three when San Mateo County
sheriff's deputies pulled them
from the slime in which they

The three men were Fred Zihn.
