MISS POTATO CHIP of 1956, six-year-old Kathleen Von
'Hollebeke of Seattle, is playing "chip on a string" which il
being introduced this year as a Halloween game. The
object of the game is to see if you can bite a series of
potato chips off a string without dropping any of them on
the floor.
Knit Fashions '
Knit dresses are so practical.
They can be dressed up or dressed
down as the occasion demands.
They are so comfortable to wear
too.
The custom-look is new this fall
season. In the soft and bulky yet
light-weight knit, the sheath coat
is worn with the tailored dress;
dresses with cardigans; and skirts
and tops. For the first time, syn
thetic fur fabric inserts are seen
on knit suits. The sheath silhouette

is endorsed for daytime knits that
are truly handsome cashmere,
satin-textured synthetics, and dry
hand wools. The Empire and long
torso silhouettes are favored,
For late day a feeling of ele
gance is ' created by the use of
metallic yarns, satin-yard knits,
and - gossamer' knitted lace
mounted ' over net. Filmy lacy
knits give a feeling of airiness
when used to create the cocktail
dress. There is a freshness in the
ribbon knits this season. Silk
organdy ribbon knits are used ef
fectively along or in combination
with fabric for example a ribbon
bodice and a bouffant chiffon skirt.
New trends are evidenced In
sweaters too. The height of luxury
is achieved by combining fine
lambs wool and fur. Inserts of
ribbon, ribbon run through yarns,
looped split fronts, welting on' col
lars, and packets are well de
signed. Jewel-trim is still impor
tant.
Heavy knit three-quarter length
sweaters of Orion with a high cape
collar are different and designed
for casual living.
The National Institute of Dry-
cleaning, Silver Spring, Maryland,
advises that wool knit garments
are handled differently' than rib
bon knits or knits made from the
newer synthetic .fibers. Comult

Fun and Games
Here's a new one to add to your
list of games for the youngsters'
Halloween party.
"Chip on a string" is a game
requiring only potato chips and a
length of twine. Pierce 10 potato
chips of fairly uniform aiie with
a sharp object such as ice pick or
darning needle and arrange on a
length 01 string.
Object of the game la to bite
off the potato chips without any
dropping on the floor. The player
who gets his 10 potato chips off
the string with the least muss
on the floor is declared winner.
The first annual . October Potato
Chip Month is being celebrated in
Oregon and Washington this year.
It would seem that October is a
good choice of months as Hal
loween is a good climax to pro
motion of increased eating of po
tato cnips.
The five Oregon and Washington
manufacturers of potato chips
which have joined in forming the
new Pacific Northwest Potato Chip
Industry organization are Nalley's,
Inc., of Tacoma, with branches in '
Spokane and Springfield, Ore
gon; Williams and Company of Se
attle with a branch in Portland;
Blue Bell Potato Chip Company
of Portland: Good-ee Potato Chip
Company of Vancouver and Jack
son's, Inc., of Pasco, Washington.
The potato chip manufacturers
are bringing us the finest possible
product and several of them are
now packaging the chips in twin
wixed paper bags for additional
convenience and freshness.
Oddly enough, this Pacific North
west area consumes about half as
many potato chips annually as the
average in the United States. Tha
manufacturers of potato chips sug
gest we eat more of what, we pro
duce in our own area.
