14 months, but rain is still rare

slight to help much. Scattered to
heavy rains in Oklahoma helped,
but most of the state reported sup
plies of water still were short.

souri. Even had the rains been senernl
and heavy, agricultural experts
say, they alone would not have
erased the scars of 10 years of
general drought. The drought was
broken only by a wet season in
1949.
To restore subsoil moisture, say
the experts, rains must be fre
quent and heavy.
The Texas rains, which caused
floods around Del Rio on the Mex
ican border, appeared the heavi
est of any in the Southwest.
Where moisture fell, it raised:
the level of stock water ponds. On!
the ltio Grande, which divides i
Texas and Mexico, a total gain of
4 to 5 feet was expected at Falcon I
Dam from the heavy Del Rio
rains. Flow from the reservoir has
been cut off for many weeks be
cause the water level has been
low.
Rains fell 'in the watersheds of
the rivers supplying North Central
Texas cities with water, but the
soil was so dcy the rains were
absorbed where thev Ml and there
was not much runoff into city res
ervoirs.
The prospects for rainS in the
Southwest in the fall and winter
are not good, Weather Bureau
records show.

armed men.
Officer Glen Nichols, about 35,
was shot three times and critic
ally hurt and officer Robert Go
lightly, about 28. was wounded
once in the roadside gun fight on
U.S. Route 86 bypass.
Sheriff William Keys said two
Juliet, 111., men were- captured,
but the two others involved in the
fracas eluded police. Keys identi
fied the prisoners as William G.
Wilfong, 31, Juliet and Arvid Jopp,
24. Jqliet.
Keys said the officers chased an
auto carrying the four men after
it went through a red light near
Lincoln,- a central Illinois commu
nity. The car stopped near a restau
rant and the four opened fire as
the officers drove up, Keys relat
ed. The policemen returned the gun
fire, but Keys said he did not know
if the two who escaped on foot in
opposite directions were wounded.
Neither of the captured pair was
struck by bullets, he said.
No charges have as yet been
placed against the two prisoners.
