Colorado Dam
Projects Start

of Reclamation officials waited at
two remote spots today for the
signal from President Eisenhow
er that starts construction of the
gigantic Upper Colorado River
project.
Arrangements were made for
the President to touch a button
in the White House in Washington.
It was to set off an electrical im
pulse which would travel along
telephone lines and on radio cir
cuits to Glen Canyon, in northern
Arizona, and Flaming Gorge, in
northern Utah.
There explosives were ready to
begin, at the President's signal,
construction work on two of the
units which make up the 760-mil-lion-dollar
project, largest reclam
ation undertaking ever authorized
by Congress at a single time.
Glen Canyon, 700 feet high, and
Flaming Gorge, 500 feet high, will
be two of the four storage and
power-producing dams of the Up
per Colorado project. Both will be
of concrete.
Glen Canyon, on the Colorado
River in Arizona, just south of the
Utah border, will produce 800,000
kilowntts of power, about two
thirds the capacity of Hoover Dam
olso on the Colorado. Flaming
Ciorge, on the uien River, a
Colorado tributary, will produce
85,000 kilowatts. It is located in
Utah, just south of the Wyoming
border.
The Upper Colorado project also
includes distribution units which I
will carry water to land in the'
area for irrigation purposes. Al
together the project embraces an
area of about 110,000 square miles.
Construction of Glen Canyon and
F'oniing Gorge dams is expected
to take about six years. Develop-1
men' of other units will take even
longer.
Youths Blasted

CHICAGO W-Two high school
boys, mangled in the explosion
of a bomb they fashioned of iron
pipe and chemicals bought in a
drugstore, were in critical condi
tion in Holy Cross Hospital today.
The explosion of the potassium
chromate and sulfur bomb blew off
the left forearms of both William
Ryan, 16, and Walter Prohaska,
15: badly mangled their right
hands; and shredded their leg
muscles.
