Son In Cast Solves Family
Crisis For George, Grade

HOLLYWOOD (UP) To George
Burns and Oracle Allen the addi
tion of son Ronnie to their CBS-TV
show has meant higher ratings and
bags ol fan mail for the boy. But to
Burns and Allen, parents, It also
solved a family crisis.
Burns happily admits Ronnie
gave the show a boost. And the
handsome 19-year-old has launched
an exciting career. He's been of
fered film studio contracts; he's
made guest appearances with Jack
ie Cleason and Jack Benny and
acted on "Front Row Center."
But behind the scenes Is a dif
ferent story about Ronnie, a story
one hears around the family circle
in the Burns home In Beverly Hills.
"WHAT TO DO"
There Burns sounds like any fath
er who's faced with the problem:
What to do with a son who has
trouble finding his niche in life?
"Ronnie didn't know what he
wanted to do," explained Burns in
a fatherly tone as I sat with the
family in their comfortable den.
"For a while he was a lifesaver.
Then it was surfboards. Then he
built a boat In the back yard.
Titanic Sinking Planned
For TV Showing Wednesday

Remember," a dramatization of
Walter Lord's best-selling book on
the sinking of the SS Titanic, will,
be presented tomorrow night on
NBC-TV.
A cast of 105 will be maneuvered
among a maze of 31 sets in NBC's
huge Brooklyn studios on Kraft
Television Theater. The move to
Brooklyn from the usual NBC
Manhattan studios was forced be
cause everybody agreed It simply
wasn't safe to store 3,000 gallons
of water in tanks on an upper
floor of the RCA Building.
That's the amount of water
which will be used In two huge
tanks' for scenes simulating the
sinking of the ship after It struck
an iceberg. The water problem Is
only one of many that has de
signer Duane McKinney chewing
his nails. Since scenery has been
immersed in water for days dur
ing rehearsals he can't shake olf
the dread that when some actor
has to come through a cabin door
on cue tomorrow night that door
mav have warped and be irrevo
cably closed.
"A Night to Remember" is the
fruit of nearly 30 years of re
search by Walter Lord. Since he's
still a young man, his interest in

"A lot of parents force their kids
to be what they wished they had
been. I wanted Ronnie to go to
college probably because I didn't.
We wanted him to take up law.
We had no idea he wanted to be
an actor.
"Last summer we didn't want
him on the beach for 10 weeks so
we suggested he take a dramatic
course at Pasadena Playhouse Just
for experience. When he called us
he'd gotten the lend in "Picnic' at
the school we were elated.
PERFORMANCE
"We went lo see his performance
and Gracie said, 'He wants to ba
an actor.' "
Burns paused, lit his usual cigar
and continued: "He was good. So I
asked him if he wanted to be bn
the show. We didn't want to force
him to be an actor."
Young Ronnie, who was sitting
in the den watching his father talk,
spoke up. "I was very happy to get
the Job. I didn't have to go back to
college!"
"Children," concluded father
Burns, "find their natural groove.
Leave them alone. They'll find
what they want to do."

"I simply began collecting ev
erything I read or heard about the
sinking of the Titanic," Lord said
the other day. "And then one day
I realized I had a book. The writ
ing took less than a year."
Is he surprised by Its success?
"I knew the story had the ele
ments of wide appeal," he said.
"After all, you had many of the
world's wealthiest and most glam
orous people sailing on the maiden
voyage of the world's biggest and
most glamorous ship."

"The basic aim of the store Is
to make catalog ordering more
simplified and to speed deliver
ies." Turner said. "Orders re
ceived will be' forwarded to Oak
land and most Items can be re
ceived back in Dunsmulr on a
46-hour basis." he added.
Credit accounts for the area will
be handled at the new store and
payments will be accepted there.
