Mrs. Byron Johnson Relaies
Interest In Red Cross Work
A lifelong interest in swimming
and a desire to help in the com
munity programs motivate Mrs.
Byron (Arlie Mae) Johnson of Ma
lm to serve as a Red Cross volun
teer. Mrs. Johnson says:
'I had my first Red Cross
swimming training in Dallas. Ore
gon and earned by Ufesavlng badge
when I was 16 years old. I came
to Maun as a bride IS years aao.
My husband has a farm imple
ment business and we live on a
ranch east of Malin. I have four
boys. David 13, Richard 11. Van 4
and Douglas 3.

we must have trained people to
conduct the swimming program.
There is a lot of difference be
tween Just knowing how to swim
for personal pleasure or Demg
capable of assuming responsibility
for the safety of a group of chil
dren in a pool, plus understanding
the techniques of teaching them
to swim.
"This is an important part of
the training which the R e d Cross
gave me. The Klamath chapter
paid my expenses to a National
Red Cross aquatic school in Brem
erton. Washington, asking only that
I volunteer some time each year
to the swimming program in my
own community. In addition to
this I have attended the training
courses which the local chapter

John C- Warnke. forester for the
Bureau of Land Management in
charjre of the southeast unit of the
Medford Forest District, has re
signed to accept employment with
the logging and lumber concern of
Puckett and scherer in Klamath
Falls.
Warnke is a graduate of the
School of Forestry at Montana
State University. He served three
and one-half years in the Army
Air Force, one year for Lockheed
Aircraft Company in Burbank, Cali
fornia and two years for the U.S.
Forest Service in the state of
Washington before commencing
work for the Bureau of Land
Management in Medford in June,
1950.
Walter Gavin is serving as act
ing unit forester in the vacancy
created by Warnke'3 resignation.
Gavin is a graduate of the School
of Forestry of the University of
California, and commenced work
with the Bureau of Land Manage
ment in Medford in June, 1952.
