Also unlike the Oscars, most of
the Emmy nominees plan to bhow
up for the show both here and In
New York. Oracle Allen, Eve Ar
den. Walt Disney, Loretta Young,
Barry Bullivnn, Robert Young and
Danny Thomas are among the 208

would be happy to be on any
ticket" with Vice President Nixon
was Interpreted by senators of
both parties today as foreshadow
ing Nixon's renomination.
"That ought to end any rumors
the President might have another
running mate." Sen. Mundt (R
SD told an interviewer. He said
the Republicans are now in a po
sition to pu.sh ahead with their
campaign "while the Democrats
don't even know who their head
man will be."

Elsenhower made the state
ment, and accompanied it with
fresh praise for Nixon, in com
menting at his news conference
yesterday on the New Hampshire
primary in which more than

Nixon's name for GOP vice presi
dential candidate.
Eisenhow'er said the vote indi
cated "lots of people" in New
Hampshire "agree with what I
have told you about Dick Nixon."
Nixon didn't commit himself on
running again, although friends
said there is no doubt of his avail
ability. He issued a statement
saying:
"There could be no greater re
ward' for a man In public life than
to have the President speak so
generously as he has of my work
on several occasions during the

I tuned In the TV set and there
was mv old pal King Kong, he
of the flaming eyes and monstrous
apelike breed. It gave me quite
a turn.
There was a somewhat younger
Bruce Cabot running around in
puttees, and my old flame, Fay
Wray, whom Kong coveted. I stuck
right with It to that climactic
scene, you remember, where Kong
climbs the Empire State Building
and those old World War I biplane
Curtiss Hawks come slanting with
that ah-ah-ah-ack of machine guns.
It all took me back to 1933 be
fore Hollywood ever had heard of
television and "King Kong" stalked
the neighborhood movie houses,
fascinating or horrifying us adol-

Personally I caught it at a movie
house known as the Royal on a
dark and rainy Saturday night

Cursed by either cowardice or
an overly active Imagination, i
made my way uneasily home
I through silent, rain-swept streets.
The folks were out, I turned on
a lot of lights and the radio and
I was pretty brave for a while
there until I heard the car In the
driveway. Then I was ashamed of
myself and haven't mentioned it
till now.
To be honest about It. I didn't
just happen to tune the set to
"King Kong." I heard people talk
ing about it. The grassroots com
ment I heard on the reshowlng of
the old movie took two trurns..
First, many oldsters were Inter
ested that youngsters who weren't
alive to see Kong in his original
movie lour are just as excited by
him as the oldsters were when
they were young. It was quite
heart-warming to some to find that
kids are still kids after all despite
me warpea notions of some ad
ults that they're an entirely dif
ferent breed these days.
I also heard one or two adults
express the view that "King Kong"
Just ain't fittin' fun for young 'tins.
At lirst I was inclined to agree
with him. And then I remembered
my own experience with Kong and
thought what a sanctimonious at
titude to strike in my old age
True, Kong had frightened me. But
not enough to send me into a de
cline or ever put me in the hands
of a psychiatrist. '
In a way an old movie like "King
Kong" probably does more good
than harm. It gives us oldsters the
pleasure of that old nostalgia. And
it gives youngsters the pleasure
of something brand new.
