Home
Extension
(Editors Note: This Is the sec
ond in a scries of historical back
ground o.i tie dcvelopmen, ol
home extension work In the United
States, written by Hope Hol
brook, Klamath County Extension
agen:. )
Since the time that Winnifred
Gillen was home extension agent
In t.iis county the entire homu ex
tension program has been slated
toward the program to aid the
homemakcr to maintain the highest
Ideals of home life so thai she
may secure for herself, her family
unu her community satisfactory
health, happiness and efficiency
with a minimum expenditure of
energy and money.
Since that time there have been
a number of other women who
I were active as home agents. Helen
Stine was the agent in 1946 re-
placing Mrs. Gillen. Miss Stine is
; now a homemaker In Klamath
Falls. She is Mrs. John Vaughn
', who lives in the Yalta Garden
' dlsic:.
Other agents have been Mary
Gbnn and the former Dolores
i Bracken.
i The home extension program Is
a full one and is selected by the
i women who lieloncr to the units.
This year we have been study
ing dry cleaning at home, food
lor entertaining, picture selection
?nd framing, making cakes attrac
tive, care of the hair, and making
inns ana Dreaa irom sweet dough.
There will be a workshop on mak
ing braided rugs and some eve
ning meetings on the law in the
homes ot members.
This is the way the program is
considered. Each year two women
from each community attend coun
ty wide meetings to determine the
interests and needs of homemak
eis. Oblectlvcs are chosen toward
which the program is slanted.
From this balloting a list is made
which will help to meet these ob
jectives. Each member of a home
extension unit has a vote on the
urograms for the year. Klamath
County has 700 home extension
members. Their suggestions are
then considered by the county
workers and specialists of Oregon
State College. Ideas for practical
ly every project come from a
homemaker in some county of the
sip'?.
The Klamath County Home Eco
nomics Advisory Committee Is
made up of seven women who
renresent various arers of Klam
ath County. Each belongs to a
home extension unit. Tiese seven
women meet once a month to eval
uate the urogram. They help the
county adviser by reporting on
conditions in ti'e various loca'ilies.
This committee also has many
projects It works out. The hiitli
light of the year is the planning
for the annual homemnkers festi
val, usually set for the first week
in May. This afrair Is open to
the public. Exhibits of the projects
