Anyone observing C. Buz Lai kin Vbuzzing" around town might logically draw the
conclusion that the reason Rome wasn't built in a day was because the popular Klamath
Kails insurance agent wasn't there. Known among his friends as "Always in a Hurry Lar-
kin," the insurance vendor once was acclaimed the No. 1 prune picker in Yamhill County.
Larkin was born in Newber? in Yamhill County April 3, 1910. Other big events in
that year included the dynamite blasting of the Los Angeles Times which killed 21 per
sons; Woodrow Wilson's resignation as president of Princeton University and entrance into
D0itics; organization of the
Boy Scouts of America and
the first attempted dirigible
Client across the Atlantic.
Young Larkin didn't cause
much of a stir in Yamhill
County until he demonstrated
his prune-picking prowess in
1.920. He was elevated from
th prune orchard to l cannery the
following year.
In 1929. Larkin enrolled in the
rchon of buiness ' administration
at the University of Oregon and
wa graduated In 1933. He returned
to Newberg and with his brother,
Wallace, took over operation ol a
farm Implement and hardware
store which h?d been established

hold on the town. For a long time
anyone who entered our store with
ca.h in hand, no matter how little
was treated like royalty. I guess
the darkest day in my career was
the day In 1033 when both banks
in Newberg closed their doors."
Life remained on a pretty monot
onous level for the Larkin brother
until the Japs struck at Pearl
Harbor in 1941. Within a few days
pfter this catastrophe both boys
were in the Army with commissions
of first lieutenant. Military life for
Buz Larkin was of short duration.
He developed an ear Infection
which led to a medical discharge.
For the next seven yeara Lar
kin was employed by the J. E.
Sirrene Company of North Caro
lina as a purchasing agent for their
construction operations in Taco-
ma, Washington. Then he moved to
Klamath Falls.

At this juncture In recounting
his adventures, Larkin launched on
a verbal appraisal of the Klamath
Basin which would make a circus
press agent turn green with envy.

on earth," he declared. "In fact,
it's stupendous! Before long Klam
ath Falls will reach metropolitan

One of the m!jor events In Lar
kin's career was when he married
Margaret Tony of McMlnnville in
1MU. They now have a daughter.

Union High Echool. The Larklns

that the long, sustained winter
winter weather Is running out was
noted last week by I.-vin Paris who
reported that a sign posted at
the Willow Ranch mill announc
ing the opening of the plant on
March 19. It has been shut down
for more than two months.
Only the planer has been operat
ing at the mill but now Truman
Lawson's logging outfit Is bring
ing In logs again. These logs were
decks on the west side last fall so
they could be hauled to the mill
during the winter as they were
needed. Wet winter weather made
the road bed too soft for hauling
and work had to be suspended.

The festival was held to raise
money for a scholarship to be
given to some local boy or girl
preparing for the teaching field.
Included in the evening of fun
were dart games, throwing con
tests, guessing games, a cakewalk.

Nine members of the OTI .fire
Department and four other staff
members and students at the in
stitute completed their advanced
first aid course Monday. The ISO
hour course was instructed by Wil
lard Richards, througn the local
Red Cross office.
According to OTI Fire Chief A.
J. Loomis, the entire 13-man com
plement of the station now holds
advanced first aid ratings, which
will enable them to furtner serve
the Institute and the community
In the case of emergency. Until
recently the OTI department was
the only actual state of Oregon
fire station. It is now also under
Klamath County supervision and
works under the mutual aid sys
tem which calls on all depart
ments when extra fire fighting
facilities are needed in any area.
Plans are now under way for the
Associated Student Body to spon
sor a modern, well-equipped am
bulance which will be staffed by
the department and available in
emergencies at the institute.

Cancer Crusade was announced
last week.
Mdoc County won top honors In
