Team Record
Said "Safe"
BERKELEY. Calif. I The
coach of the 1952i U.S. Olymnic
track team thinks there's nothing
to worrv about at Melbourne ps
far as the Russians are concerned.
"By the most concrvsMve thnk.
ing." savs Brutus Hamilton, Uni
versity of Caliiomia cinder coach,
"we should score twice as many
points as the Russians."
Hamilton handled the U.S. track
forces at Hel'inki four years ago.
His charges ran up an unofficial
269 points as the Russians counted
a modest 79.
The veteran Hamilton, a prom
inent figure in American track for
ears, is well aware of the word
from Moscow that the Reds are
out to sweep the field in the Au
trallan games as they did in the
winter competiton last month.
He admits that the Russians may
make "a little better showing" than
they did al Helsinki and that this
nation's runners and jumpers "may
not do quite as well."
But by and large Hamilton is
convinced that Uncle Sam's thin
clads will do all right.
"We still have our grip on events
we've dominated for years, like
the shot, high jump, pole vault,
sprints and middle distances," he
says.
"Tiie Russians have made their
major gains In events in which we
don't specialize Uie distance runs,
hammer throw, hop-stcp-jump."
