O'Neill, who had no political as
pirations, mode up for his derelic
tion by pettinR out and hustling
votes for Biackmer who was elect
ed. "That Is the only time I ever

explained. "Manv lawyers seek
public office, but I have been satis
fied to remain in private practice."
O'Neill, who was born October

ture was a failure.

Klamnth Falls. Joe worked a year
in (he Pelican Bay Lumber Mill.

liday. "About that time.' O'Neill said,
"I decided to take my father's ad
vice and become a lawyer. So I
returned to Oregon and enrolled at
Willamette."
During the 29 years he has prac
ticed In Klamath County, O'Neill
has defended scores of persons
charged with crimes. Many of his
clients were what he described as
"characters."

He recalls one "character," Boot
black Joe Daniels, alias "Hot Shot
Joe," who was saved from the
noose by a hung Jury. The prose
cution decided not to try the al
leged slayer again.
O'Neill has tried some 40 mur
der cases and the majority of his
clients were acquitted.
Last year O'Neill started what
he says is his biggest Job. He was
retained as general counsel for the
Klamath Tribe to protect the Indi
an's rights In the liquidation of the
Klamath Reservation.
O'Neill believes the Klamath In
dians can be successfully integrat
ed into the population of Klamath
County. However, he does not be
lieve the reservation can be term
inated by August 15, 1S58, the date
set by Congress.
. Mr. and Mrs. O'Neill, who reside
at 1130 MonClalre, have two daugh
ters, Joan Fqplton and Marilyn Wil
liams, both of Klamath FUs.
They also have five grandchildren.

WEED R. B. Lucas, 43. Sacra
mento, was sentenced to six months
in the Siskiyou County Jail on
charges of battery to which he
pleaded guilty at his appearance
oefore Judge Kenneth Stone in the
Weed Judicial Court last Monday.
Lucas has been evading the local
authorities since November 3, 1953,
when he fled the scene of a fracus
at 33 Tent Street. At that time,
Helen Stokes received a stab
wound in the shoulder and filed
charges against the man. Original
charges of assault with a deadly
weapon were reduced to battery at
the request of the district attor
ney. Lucas was arrested In Sacramen
Pebruary h and returned to Weed
on February 17. . '
