CULLMAN. Ala. upi sen. Ke-
fauver (D-Tenn), aspirant lor the
Democratic presidential nomina
tion, made a bid lor Alabama sup
port last night In this rural area of

He addressed a Chamber of
Commerce banquet In Cullman
the home town of Gov. James B
Folsom.
Many of 'the state's leaders sup
ported Kefauver for the Demo
cratic nomination four years afro,
when he received i of Alabama's

Most of last night's address was

LEADER DIES
ATHENS, Greece ( Alexander
Svolos, co-leader of the Greek
Democratic Party, died Thursday
morning of a cerebral hemorrhage.
He was 64. Svolos was minister of
finance In the first post-liberation
Cabinet and an authority on consti
tutional law.

YUBA CITY, Calif. (UP) Seven

nounced that Santa Claus would
put In an appearance here tomor

the leader of Brazil's sputtering
Jungle revolt was reported fleeing
today. Word spread that the be
leaguered Amazon River town of
Santnrem was back in loyal
hands.
Air force officials said the sud
den break came after government
planes, in their first blow of the
12-day revolt, strafed the rebel
held airport at Santarem.
The air force announcement said
the rebel leader, Ma). Haroldo Ve
loso, fled 'to Jacare-Acanga, a jun
gle emergency air field 160 miles
south of Santarem, and that loyal
air and ground troops he had held
prisoner retook the city of 15,000.
The government said its planes
destroyed on the ground a Beech-
craft trainer reportedly loaded with
bombs lor an attack on a troop
ship heading, up the Amazon..
Veloso had fled In this plane
from Rio de Janeiro Feb. 11 to
lAunch his revolt. Authorities said
the strafing left Veloso with only
a C47 transport In his "air force."
Many of. Santarem's residents
were reported pouring out of the
city as government forces ad
vanced. It was not yet known
whether Veloso's small rebel
band, said to include three dissi
dent air force officers and about
30 men, had fled with him.

troops had orders to take the city
without bloodshed if possible, oth

Saturday to pass out gifts donated
from all over the state. A plane
load from Alameda Naval Air
Station was due to arrive today,
and another load of gifts was
scheduled to come from Southern
California Lions Clubs.
The celebration of Christmas in
February was building up mo
mentum despite an almost steady
downpour and a threat of another
flood.
But the Weather Bureau pre
dicted some clearing for today
at least enough so SAnta won't
have to worry about finding his
way through the storm.
Yesterday looked darkest. A
ferris wheel stood dripping and
deserted in downtown Yuba City.
A colorful tent planned to house
last night's circus was ripped by
winds and taken down. Merchants
who remained open for "Christ
mas shopping" stood glum in
nearly deserted stores.
The rain slackened last night
during the circus and "street
dance" that had to be held In
the auditorium, while the ominous
Feather River crested upstream.
Officials said, however, that the
crest here today would probably
be about 10 feet below the danger
level.
The Weather Bureau predicted
no . general improvement until
about Friday night, but that's soon
enough for the kids of Yuba City
and Marysvllle because Saturday
is Christmas for them.
Bus Boycott
Arrests Seen
MONTGOMERY. Ala. W)
Dozens of new bus boycott ar
rests were expected today while
preparations were made for a
mass meeting tonight of 10.000
Negroes praying for "Justice to
prevail."
And to emphasize their deter
mination, boycott leaders pro
claimed tomorrow "prayer
pilgrimage day." They said every
"race-loving" Negro will shun all
motor vehicles and walk wherever
they go on that day.
Scores of Negroes crowded outside-
the Montgomery County Jail
yesterday and watched quietly as
721 of 115 persons Indicted for boy
cotting were brotight In and
booked.
The 73 taken Into custody, all
Negroes, Included several politi
cal leaders and 23 ministers. All
were released In $300 bond.
The wholesale arrests followed
a report by the Montgomery Coun
ty grand Jury, which named 116
persons as active participants in
the boycott, now In Its 12th week
in protest against racial segrega
tion. The mass meeting tonight and
the no-ride "pilgrimage" tomor
row were announced by the Rev.
Ralph D. Abernathy, one of those
indicted for boycotting and pastor
of the First Baptist Church, where
the "praver for justice" meeting
will be held.

driving habits on the part ot Its
employes. Union Oil Company is
presenting awards for outstanding
safe driving records again t n 1 s
year, according to W. I. Martin,
manager Northwest Territory for
Union.
This award program was estab
lished in 1951 and each year lapel
pins and certificates are given to
those drivers who have not had a
single accident. Rules for this
award program are comparable to
those of the National Safety Coun
cil. Qualifying for the award this
year from this area are, A. E.
