Tentative
Plan Studied
Studies have progressed to
point where the District Office of
the California Division of Highways
at Redding Is able to reveal a
tentative plan for relocation of a
section of the Susanville-Alluras
highway beginning at the Pit River
Just north of Likely and extending
to 6 miles south of Alturas. This
will be a freeway with limited ac
cess.
The proposed location Is general-
1y parallel to that of the present
highway but is located to the east
with the exception of one short sec
tion about one mile in length being
some 2''2 miles from the north
end of the section which is on the
west side.
The new road will have a shorter
and more direct location, and when
built will be constructed on grades
which will permit it to be a mod
ern highway link. It will replace
the present state highway in this
area which was never located as
a highway but simply matured
from a trail to a county road and
was finally taken into the state
highway system and provided With
surfacing sufficient to take care of
the existing traffic.
It should be noted that the pres
ent relocation plan does not con
template immediate construction.
It is a necessary preliminary step
whereby the location of the future
highway Is determined so when ac
tual construction funds are avail
able everything will be In order to
proceed.
A public meeting to review gen
eral features of the proposed loca
tion will be held In the Fire Hall
at Likely the afternoon of March
6 at 3 p.m. At this time a represen
tative from the Division of High
ways in Redding will be present
nd will be glad to answer any
questions of anyone who desires to
appear at the meeting for lurther
information on the project.

Plan Trip
WEED The Weed Elementary
A Cubs will travel to Redding Sat
urday February 25 to vie for their
third basketball tournament cham
pionship this season. The cubs
won the first tourney in the Weed
school history by winning the
championship trophy at the Duns.
muir Recreation Tournament De
cember 10, and won their second
championship, also this season,
when they took the title trophy at
the Yreka Elementary Tournament
February 28.
In the Yreka schedule the cub3

Local Interim Meet Planned

Lutheran Choir
To Sing Here
Under the direction of Professor
Ounnar J. Malmin, the Pacific Lu
theran College "Choir of the West"
from Parkland, Washington will
give a sacred concert here Feb
ruary 25 at the Mills Auditorium
at 8 p.m.
Now In his 19th year as director
of the choir. Professor Malmin is
renowned in church music circles
for his compositions and arrange
ments. He has arranged many of
the famous hymns of the church
for choir use, and has written sev
eral original compositions includ
ing the Christmas cantata, "Beth
lehem." Professor Malmin has studied
abroad two different years. In 1924
he took work at the University of
Oslo, Norway. Returning to Europe
in 1952 on a Fullbright scholarship,
he made a study of music educa
tion In Norway, Denmark, Belgium
and Germany,
Prior to coming to Pacific Lu
theran in 1937, Professor Malmin
taught music at Drake University
and Dana College. He received his
bachelor of arts degree from Lu
ther College and his bachelor of
music degree from St. Olaf Col
lege, where he studied under F.
Melius Christiansen. He received
'his master of music degree from
the University of Michigan.
Fringe areas throughout Oregon
all face the same problems of sani
tation and annexation, according
to reports given by the Oregon In
terim Legislative Committee on
Local Government. This report
was reviewed by Truman Runyan,
chairman of the Klamath County
Chamber of Commerce Civic Af
fairs Committee, at a meeting
Tuesday morning in the chamber
offices.
The meeting was held to lay
plans for the Interim Committee's
hearing scheduled for Friday.
March 3 at 1:30 p.m. in Mills
Scnool auditorium. -
Runyan stated that transcripts
received from the committee show
that sanitation problems are the
chief concern of most Oregon cit
ies. This problem Is consistent
with all growing communities
throughout the United States,
according to the report.
Another pressing problem fac
ing growing urban and suburban
areas is that of overlapping tax
districts and the pondercusness of
existing Oregon annexation laws,
stated Runyan.
The chamber chairman read a
statement which has been pre
pared by his committee and will
be presented to the Interim group
at Its Klamath Falls hearing.
This statement advocates legal
provisions for small landowners to
withdraw from irrigation districts
and for the settlement of sanita
tion and other problems in ther
suburban area.
Tax and irrigation district offi
cials, mayors of the county's coin
mtmltles, labor leaders, and other
interested individuals have been
invited to present .briefs at thet
Interim hearing. Runyan said. I
Tuesday's meeting was attended
by chamber oificUls. residents of
the suburban area, representatives
of the county health department
and a representative of the Klam
ath County Court attended the
meeting.
