part. The drive was sponsored bv
the Letterman s Club, during Jan",
uary. There were donations and a
basketball game to raise money Jor
this worthy cause. .Vera Rochek,
principal.- reported that the contri
butions were as follows: Basketball

Bogey Man's Real Drama ,
Takes Place Behind Scenes

HOLLYWOOD (UP Hollywood'
top bogey men are making a super
colossal horror tilm, but behind
the cameras there is a reaMiie
drama that's more startling.
While the cameras rolled, a slen
der man watching on the sidelines
said shortly, "I used to take five or
tix needle a day. And when I
took the curr they took it all away
from me. . .It was horrible, just
horrible. ..."
Beta "Oracula" Lugost is back
in the movies for the first time
since he confessed he was a nar
cotris addict and committed him
self to a state hospital.
In the old days Lipgosl was the
star, the mad scientist who stirred
bubbling concoctions, but on this
set Basil Rath bone Is playing the
looney doctor. Lon Chaney, John
Carradlne and Akim Tamlroff also
are in "The Black Sleep.'' Lugosi
plays Rathbone's butler, a mute
servant "who Just lets people in
and out."
"There is Basil playing my
part," Lugosi said as we stood on
the set. I used to be the big
cneese. I have no dialogue because
I was a bit worried whether I
could do Justice to the expecta
tions. I'm still recuperating.
In the gloomy set. Rath bone was
reviving a man in the coffin. But
I shivered more from the off
screen horror story Lugosi told
me.
"I began using narcotics to kill
the pain of sciatica," he ' said.
Finally the doctor said I used sc
much I would die in Fix months if
I didn't stop.
''I couldn't afford the sanitar
ium. The only solution was to vol
unteer to enter the county hospital
There was no sense in trying to
hide my problem. The cure was
very painful, terrible."
On the movie set. old friends
came up to shake Lugosi's hand
on his first day back at work. The
cast presented him with a black
leather script book.
"I was once nice to them. It
all comes back to you," the actor

lowly from the set out into
the sun.
