On February 7, the Gilchrist Ju
nlor High gave their speech as
sembly before the student body.
Mervin Jordan acted as master of
ceremonies. Mary Evins, second
place in humorous, gave "The
Night The Bed Fell." Chet Em
ery, first place In serious, recited
"Flesch and Phonics." Lindsav
Thompson, who took second place
In serious, presented "The Evils
of Narcotics." Grade seven nave
their second place radio script.
"Lewis and Clark at the Pacific."
Linda Wyse, first piece in storv

er, first place in poetry, recited

on the town water tank today as
the 400 citizens of this northwest
Louisiana town hoped for an end
to lour bathlcss, shaveless, wa
terless days.
Repairs began on the leaky wa
ter tank Thursday. Drinking water
has been hnuled Irom nearby
farms and a gas refinery, but the
lack of cooking and washing wa
ter closed down the drugstore, bar
ber shop and local cales.
Workmen hope to have repairs
completed by late tonight or early
tomorrow.

SACRAMENTO UP The new
state budget released today pro
poses to spend 35,727.101 to oper
ate state prisons In the next fiscal
year.
The amount requested by the
Department of Finance is 6.4 per
cent above current expenditures.
The department asked the Legis
lature to authorize 157 new posi
tions. It estimated the adult prison
population in the 1956-57 fiscal
year at 15.893 inmates, an increase
of 2.9 per cent.
Parolees In the same period will
total 7235, an Increase of 9.8 per
cent, the department estimated.
The amount budgeted for the

Crew Leaps From
Damaged Piane
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (ifl An Air
Force CI 19 ferry crew balled out
yesterday after the plane's con
trols went haywire a few minutes
before a fuel stop. The plane
crashed and burned about six
miles east of here.
The crew was ferrying the plane
from Hagerstown,' Md.( to their
home base at Randolph Field, Tex.
The copilot. MaJ. Darrell Cal
kins, 35, Stillwater, Okla., was
treated at a local hospital.
The other three landed unhurt.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (UP) A
tractor-trailer carrying 40 crates
of eggs smashed into a bridge,
ripping off its wheels and causing
11.000 damage to the bridge.

California's Mental
Hospital Plight Grows
SACRAMENTO (UP) The State
Department of Mental Hygiene es
timated today more than 42,000
persons will be confined in Califor
nia mental institutions by mid-1957
and asked the Legislature to ap
prove a record-breaking $79,913,081
budget for the next fiscal year.
The budget request was submit
ted by the State Department of
Finance to the Assembly Ways
and Means Committee today. The
mental hygiene budget is up 10.6
per cent over current expenditures
or an Increase of $7,647,894.
Mental hygiene asked the legisla
tors to hire 1,020 additional staffers
to help care for the mentally 111 at
a dlltcrent Institutions.
