Whether the celling Js slanted or level, the broad overhead expanse is remi niscent of a church, as is the nat ural beauty and dignity of the hardwood. Often used in larger split-level homes, the "tali" living rooms may have a balcony along one wall for access to bedrooms on the second level. The trend is indicative of the wide variety of effects that can be achieved with hardwood plywood wall paneling. Another example is the accent wall, a- decorative tech nique that has proven immensely popular in the past year. At low cost, a single wall In a living room or den can be paneled in genuine hardwood plywood, serving to set the decorative motif for the entire room. Builders have taken to the accent Wall as a quality feature which lends individuality to the home in terior. A typical wall can be pan eled for anywhere from $35 to $75, depending on the choice of hard , wood species. The initial cost is amortized by the durability and easy maintenance of the paneling. ; The light-toned woods, often fa ;vored for smaller rooms, are birch, j maple, natural gum, oak, limba, ash and elm. The medium and - darker toned woods, preferred by i many for larger areas such as t "cathedral effect" living rooms, are red oak, walnut, mahogany, red gum and cherry. . Wall paneling usually is applied in 2x4, 3x4 or 4x8 foot panels, one quarter inch thick. It is available either unfinished or factory pre finlshed. Panels can be obtained which are routed vertically at in tervals for a random-plank effect. PLYWOOD PLANK EFFECT If you want to finish walls with wood planking, the easiest and most economical way to achieve that effect is to install 16-inch wide hardwood plywood "planks" 4x8 foot panels which are routed vertically at intervals to simulate planking. No I matter what section of the country you live in, there is always some time during the year when out door living and entertaining is pleasant, relaxing and almost a must." The section of the country In which you live and the situation of your bouse depends a great deal upon where you should build a patio. If you want to take ad vantage of the sun in a cooler climate the patio should be- in stalled where it will pick up sun pockets and stay warm into the evening hours. The shady side of the house is ideal for a patio in a warm, long summer season. Put your patio where it will take advantage of refreshing breezes and be most comfortable and cool. In any kind of weather it be rainy, cool, hot or Just right, It's hard to beat a raised Douglas fir deck patio for beauty, economy and ease of maintenance. Fir 2x8s may be purchased in inexpensive grades and laid hori zontally over the entire patio floor area, or may be placed in a check erooard pattern, eight or ten boards laid perpendicularly to another series of eight or ten. The deck is built by laying foun dation timbers on cement caps or rocks, making sure that the wood does not touch the ground. On the timbers are placed joists or string ers four feet on center, with the decking nailed to these. Space the 2x&s a quarter of an inch apart so, narrow enough so nign heels do not ca:h, but wide enough that water may run through. This way, you neea nev er sweep your patio a quick hOFiner will clean it quicKJy ana circulating air will dry it In a wink. Problem sites will lend them selves to deck patios better than to any other patio construction material. A hilly or rocky site where landscaping is difficult will be concealed by a deck patio, and workable wood is easier to use in this case then anything else. You can embellish your outdoor living area with benches built onto banisters for lounging or reading. Be sure to slant the backs of the benches so they will be comfort able. These, and picnic tables and benches may be built of fir to match the decking, but are parti cularly good If constructed of the naturally weainer-resisiam west ern red cedar. You may choose to stain benches and banisters to match siding ol the house, or leave it natural to weather to soft rustic gray. In any- ewnt. this patio will take years of hard wear and blend beautifully with other materials used in home construction, and wood construction gives it an in door living room graciousness.
