BACK IN THE YEARS about 1937 when folks were collecting everything from beetles to white
jade, a pair of fine china shoes with an iridescent sheen were given to Mrs. Don F. (Dorothea) .
Nolan, co-owner and operator with her husband of the Driftwood Cafe. That pair of flower
bedecked shoes was the springboard to her present collection of more than 800 shoes, now
on display at the Drittwood.

Mrs. Vornon Wnrd, the former
Helen Maxlna Miller. 32, who lost
her life on Jnnuaiy 27 In a traffic
accident at Rosebtirg, was a for
mer resident of Klamath Falls.
Mr. and Mrs. Ward left here about
one and a half years ago to make
their home In Roseburg.
According to reports reaching
here, 'she was en route to work in
Roseburg about 9 a.m. when her
car, In which she was traveling,
alone, struck an Icy spot on High
way 99 about four miles uoulh of
Roseburg and went out of control.
The injured woman died about
halt an hour later in The Douglas
Community Hospital.
She was the mother of four
young children, two sons, Donald
and John, and two daughters, Pat-
ay and Barbara. She was the
daughter of John C. Miller, for
mer resident of Klamath Palls,
now of Wendell, Idaho, sister of
Don Miller, Idaho Falls, Idaho,
John C. Miller Jr.. of Roscburg.

Her husband's parents, Mr. and

pit of a Royal Air Force plane
that flew to Mindanao (a pilot's
goodluck churm) are In the collec
tion of the hundreds of shoes and
boots, tiny skis and skates and
miniature silver charms that have
been gathered from around the
world by Mrs. Don F. Nolan,
resident of Klamath Falls since
1928.
The collection "Just grew." con
fessed Mrs. Nolan, when friends
learned of her Interest In a hobby
and additions cume from total
strangers who had heard about
the "shoe shenanigans."
The collection includes a pair
of slippers from South America
woven Willi "elephant hnlr." a
shoe of native stone, carved by
a ranch hand on tiie Black and
White Ranch owned by the late
diet Barton, from stone of Poe
Valley, a slipper from Guadalcanal,
still holding the sand of white
beach In the tropics, woven rush
sandals worn by fighting service
men during leisure hours from
trips ncro.ss the Burma Road; a
shoe carved from an Arizona cac
tus root.
Santos boots with candles In
their boot tops, blown glass and
colored ceramics, bronze, and sll-
I ver slippers, embroidered sandals
' from Saudi Arabia and sandals
j made of birch bark. Smallest of
the shoes Is one quarter Inch long.
Oldest speclmans In the collec
I Hon are of carved wood, made

Mrs. Nolan has placed them In
a gloss-enclosed shelves in the
cafe for the enjoyment of patrons.

Hotel, told Circuit Judge David

mony while a fugitive from Justice
and after six months of married
life decided to give himself up to
the FBI.
Mcclain was before the court
for arraignment. He waived grand
Jury investigation of his case and
pleaded guilty to an IrJormation
charging embezzlement filed by
District Attorney Richard Beesiey.

McClnln was returned to Klam
ath Falls Thursday by Deputy
Sheriff Dale Mattoon. A nation
wide search was launched for him
a year ago after Marvin Brown,
manager of the Wiltord. signed
the embezzlement complaint.
Under questioning by Judge Van
denberg. the defendant recounted
how he traveled with a carnival
for several months. He sold he
met his present wife who was a
carnival worker at that time.
'After we had been married
six months." he continued. "I de
ctded to give myself up and pay
my dent to society."
McClnln also admitted to the
court that he was sentenced to
12 years In Oregon State Prison
for armed robbery and was once
returned to the prison as a parole
violator. He said he also had been
previously convicted of. embezzlement.

CHILOQUIN Police Chief
Lewis Jones of Chiloquin an
nounced Saturday that he has re
signed the post he held for three
years to devote his time to youth
programs.
Jones took the Chiloquin police
Job after serving two years on the
police department of Toppenlsh,
Washington. He plans to continue
to moke his home In Chiloquin.
Although a successor to Jones
hos not been named by the Chilo
quin City Council. It is reported
