Three hundred pastors and lay
men of the United Lutheran
Church's Northwest Synod met to
day to decide whether to defrock
three young ministers for heresy.
The special convention was
called to review the heresy cases
of the Revs. George Crist Jr., 31,
John Gerberding, 33, and Victor
K. Wiigley, 36.
The three ministers are formei
pastors in the Milwaukee, Wis.,
area and one-time classmates in
college. They are charged with
preaching and teaching doctrinal
deviations, including denial of the
virgin birth and physical resur
rection of Christ.
The case has aroused wide inter
est throughout the Protestant
world. Some theologians and protest-Hit
spokesmen have defended
the young ministers, saying Mar
tin Luther, himself, was a heretic.
Dr Paul E. Bishop of Minnea
polis head of the Northwest Synod
said the convention would make a
final judgment on the clerical fate
of the three pastors.
The Rev. Crist, former pastor
of the Gethsemane Lutheran
Church at Durham. Wis., and the
Rev Wrigley, former pastor of the
Gelhcmane Lutheran Church at
Brookficld. Wis., were found guilty
of heresy charges last year by
church trial committees.
Crist was convicted July 28 on
nine of 15 counts and was sus
pended from the ministry despite
his steadlasl denials that he was
guilty of any deviation.
Wrlulev was convicted on five
of six heresy counts Nov. 11 and
was suspended by synod officers.
Gerberding was acquitted on
seven counts Auc. 31 "but was cen
sured by the trial committee for
"obvious confusion, Immaturity
and Inconsistency."

gain leadership experience.
YMCA officials feel that the
Family Nights are probably the
broadest in scope of all the local
YMCA programs. Families from
all over the Basin meet at the
YMCA building on the first and!
third Friday of each month for an;
evening of fun together. There are j
no restrictions as to who may
come, , and guests need not be
members of the YMCA. j
The evenings usually begin with
a. potluck dinner at 6:45 p.m., and I
