THE NEW LOCATION for thi Roper and Roper Paint Store is 1007 Main Street. The paint and
wallpaper business opened in the present' ttore about January I. Jack Roper, the owner, was
in business at the previous store, 2012 South Sixth Street, for eight years. The new store pro
vides for floor space and a larger stock than before. Roper is in both the contracting and re
tail business. Manager of the store is J. D. Lowry, above.

The law now requires that most
government-held surpluses be sold
st not less than the support price
plus a S per cent handling and
storage charge.
Sen. Humphrey (D-Mlnn) called
the request "a Joker" that could
further beat down all farm prices
after a five-year decline, and add
ed, in a statement:
"It becomes apparent that they
are more concerned about getting
rid of government holdings than
they are about what happens to the
farmer."
Sen. Morse (D-Ore) Joined In the
attack saying that President Elsen
hower's "farm proposals would
continue and even deepen the
farm price slide."

1955 storm damages totaling at
least $1,108,000, R. F. Grefe, re
gional engineer, estimated Thurs
day. He said it was the second highest
damage year on record. The worst
was in 1948 when the sudden melt
ing of winter snows brought on
floods that caused losses of three
to four million dollars.
Grefe said roads, bridges, and
culverts took the greatest beating,
but forest camp and picnic areas
will cost some $42,000 to put back
Into shape.
Siskiyou Forest In southwestern
Oregon was the most heavily dam
aged In the 1955 storms, he said,
closely followed by Mt. Hood in
Northern Oregon. In Washington,
Snoqualmle. Okanogan and Olym
pic were the most heavily dam
aged. Every forest, he said, suffered
some damage.

Defines Policy

Averell Harriman announced last
night he will not allow his name
to be entered In any presidential
primaries without his consent.
It was the first statement by the
New York State governor on
whether he would test his voter
popularity with avowed presiden
tial Democratic: candidates Adial
E. Stevenson and Sen. Eates Ke
fauver. Harriman, who admitted he Is
the "favorite son" of New York
State's 98-vote key delegation,
again said he was not "an active
candidate" for the Deinocratio
nomination.
Ho predicted that the Demo
crats will, recapture the White
House this November against any
Republican candidates, Including
President ,. Eisenhower and Vice
President Richard Nixon and Chief
Justice Earl Warren.
The governor's announced re
fusal to enter any primaries was
interpreted by some observers as
an apparent campaign strategy to
stay on the sidelines until Demo
cratic party leaders and voters
test the popularity of Stevenson
and Kefauver.
Harriman has entered only one
primary previously, that in 1953
when in the District of Columbia
he defeated presidential aspirant
Kefauver of Tennessee handily,
14,075 votes to 3377.

Record Set

housewife piunged 270 feet beneath
the Atlantic Ocean yesterday to
set a new world skin diving tecord
for women..
Mrs. Barbara Jacobs, 33, appar
ently wasn't bothered by the (mys
terious "rapture of the deep" that
snuffed out the life of Miami Atty.
Hope Root when be tried a similar
dive off Miami Beach two years
ago.
With instructor Ed Townsend of
Hollywood Beach accompanying
her and her husband waiting above
on a boat, Mrs. Jacobs yesterday
swam down a 400-foot anchor line
and tied a marker at 370-fcet
down. Her dive beat the record of
309 feet aet on the Pacific Coast
last year by Zale Perry.
Townsend. remembering Root's
fate,- wouldn't let the attractive
mother of two boys take a chance
by going deeper.
Root, trying to break the men's
skin diving record, passed the 400
foot mack and then apparently let
bis breathing apparatus slip off.
He never came back.
"I was frightened until I found
my equipment was in good shape."
Mrs, Jaoobs said after she clam
bered back Into the boat. "I re
member one incident very well
down below the 200-foot mark. . .
my red fingernail polish turned
blue."
Townsend explained that red
color is tillered out at such depths.

Plans Carnival
MALIN Plans are In full swine
for the annual Malln School Carni
val to be held Saturday evening.
January 31. in the high school
gvm, according to A. E. Street,
principal. Starting time Is 1:30
p m. with the coronation of the
carnival queen at 10 p.m. The
Parents and Patrons group cooper
ste with the schools in presenting
the carnival.
-Fun and excitement are in store
for all those who attend. Special
activities and events planned are
Cakewalk, country store, bingo,
food booth, queen contest, bottle
ball, fish pond, ring toss, basket
ball throw, mouse game, darts,
penny toss, novelties and short mo
vies. Tickets are being sold by the
Junior and senior ' high school
classes. Each class chooses a can
didate for the queen contest, The
candidate from the class selling
the most tickets, on a per capi
ta basis, will be crowned carni
val queen.
The public Is invited and is as
sured a good time.
Patrons Group
Hears Yomer
MALIN The January meeting of
the Malln Parents and Patrons
was held Tuesday evening In the
grade school gym with the presi
dent, Mrs. J. A. Bunnell, presid
ing.
The group voted to pay for the
cleaning of all band uniforms. It
was reported that to date U.S. Gov
ernment Savings Stamps in the
amount of $58.60 had been sold in
the high school and 1232 In the
grade school. The sale of the
stamps Is taken care of by the
Parents and Patrons group.
Plans were formulated to help
with the school carnival to be
held Saturday evening, January 31
Parents and Patrona will have
charge of the Cakewalk and the
oountry store events.
Speaker of the evening was Wll-
ber Womer of the Klamath Falls
Social Security office. He presented
a very informative and interesting
talk to the group on "How Soolal
Security Affects the Farmer.
Mrs. . Keith Cobo. Girl Scout lead.

appeal for Girl' Scout leaders in
the Malln community.. She said
